JAPE: New Material On The Way

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, News with tags , , , on December 31, 2009 by Tickets There

Hi all, this is a story that popped up a couple of weeks ago but only now, when nothing else at all at all is happening in the world, we’ve decided to give it a mention. One of Tickets There’s favorite acts, Jape is apparently working on (or finishing off) some new material. According to a blog post on the bands site, new material will be uploaded soon.

As all Jape fans are fully aware, the singer never seems to stop recording and Tickets There expects that as soon as the new Redneck’s album is done and dusted, we’re going to start hearing g a lot more about Japes latest projects.

As soon as their some meet on the story, Tickets There will be sure to let ye know….three weeks after ye hear it somewhere else. Going to buy some Lego now.

Merry Christmas from Tickets There

Posted in News with tags , , , , on December 23, 2009 by Tickets There

Sorry for reusing last year’s image, but ever since the big crash of 09, all my images and art work for the lads has been deleted. Will work to get it all back next year but for now, the message is what counts.

This year has seen an enormous rise in people visiting Tickets There and it’s really been great to see bands and fans alike starting to actually like the site (and hate it in some cases…ok, many cases) but the mails and comments we’ve received, positive or negative have all been greatly appreciated. All of us here Tickets There HQ are really excited about pushing things into overdrive in 2010.

We’ll start the year with an exclusive interview with Mr. Tim Vital, the man behind Neosupervital and go from there with interviews, live reviews, albums / ep and single reviews and of course, tons of Def Leppard, Guns N Roses and KISS information. We may even have the ticketsthere.com site up and running in the first half of 2010 so keep eyes…sort of peeled for more about that.

Anyways, enough endorsement and shameless self promotion. Have a great Christmas, a happy new year and a brilliant holiday from all at TT-HQ.

Kindest Regards,

Tickets There

HY-GIY?: Berkeley – Hope, Prayers and Bubblegum

Posted in Album Review, Hy-Giy, IRISH NOISE!, Music with tags , , , , , on December 22, 2009 by Tickets There

With the ridiculous turnover of bands we see in this country every year, some of the finest are often slipping into the ‘hiatus’ status before slipping away from consciousness altogether. Unfortunately, when it comes to the end of the year and people start their ‘Best Of’ lists, many acts that thrilled hundreds and thousands around the country just a few years before are too often left off in favor for the current ‘act de jour’. One such band is Donegal’s very own, Berkeley.

When Tickets There first started getting down and dirty in the Irish music scene alllllll the way back in naught two (2002), Berkeley were one of the most exciting, talented and promising acts going. Their debut album, Hope Prayers and Bubblegum was released the year before and through repeated appearances supporting some of the bigger acts going, TT was hooked. In terms of energy, the band resembled the same style of ferociousness on stage as the Future Kings of Spain and on record, they sounded like a undiscovered grunge act more than deserving of their chance at the big time. Fans of The Pixies, Nirvana and Big Black, will be surprised to learn that Mr. Steve Albini was sent a copy of the bands demo’s for the album and he instantly agreed to produce the album for the guys. What you have is one of the best Irish albums of the last ten years, maybe more.

Kicking things of is the chaotic, stripped back New Heavy, an obvious nod to the songs working title. New Heavy sounds like someone placed a few random mikes around the room and told the band to go mental. Very similar to At The Drive In’s style, the band shred and roar their way through some blistering moments of well composed anger. The changes and riffs are top of their game and the bands onstage rawness couldn’t be captured any better.  Not to let things down, the band jump right back with Follow Through which starts off as a full on guitar monster before the bands sublime side show’s itself and suddenly the raw, aggressive guitars are replaced with polished melodies and soft vocals. Within seconds the song’s transformed again as the guitars go to full distortion and once again we’re back in full swing.

One Way Out is a much more somber affair. The song’s composition is much grander than the first two numbers. The verse is similar to Follow Through but the chorus attempts to reach another, deeper level making the song one of the more serious styled numbers on the record. A great tune but it quickly fades away when you hear the funk fueled bass line opening of Explanations. This is a number that’s alot more radio friendly than the previous numbers and the overall production is much tighter during the heavier moments.

Ah hell, buy this album. Tickets There ain’t to tell you what every single track is like (well…you kind of are when you’re reviewing an album – Ed), where’s the magic in that? We guarantee you that if you’re a fan of At The Drive In, The Mars Volta or uplifting-ish grunge, you should like Berkeley. They write brilliant songs, they play well and they disappeared completely about two years ago. Buy their record, show them you love them and maybe we’ll coheres them into returning one day….I just got  a taste of Guinness from a plastic cup in Whelan’s.

Ash – Space Shot (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , , on December 21, 2009 by Tickets There

For those of you who live for consistency, order and symmetry, please do not read on. For the rest of you, Tickets There is jumping the gun. Space Shot isn’t due to be released in the A – Z Series until the end of January but TT decided if the video’s out, the review should be out to. Lot of blogs, E-Zines, indie press heads and publications, like Hotpress and AU trying to steal Tickets There’s title as Irelands sexiest music blog, so we must stay on top J (PUN).

Well Tickets There has been uplifted today. After the disappointing sixth release in the series, Pripyat, we’re delighted to inform you that Ash’s good run hasn’t come to an end. In fact single HSpace Shot, has the potential to be as big as any song they’ve released before. We first heard it at the bands recent show in the Button factory and actually made the mistake of thinking it must have been on some album we never listened too much. We got a cheerful little surprise when the video appeared online a few days ago and, well…we don’t have much to say. It’s not Pink Floyd, its Ash. Just listen and enjoy the perfect pop melodies, the constant uplifting sounds and appreciate that this is just one of hundreds of brilliant pop songs the band have composed over the years.

As we saw on True Love 1980 and Return of White Rabbit, Ash need no guitars to make their blend of catchy, hooky rock…two words I’m really starting to despise when writing these singles. I’ll try and expand the auld vo-cab. as this series goes on. Space Shot is based more around synths, effects and an amazingly catchy chorus. It’s got all the hallmarks of a classic but with a fresher sound.

Ash, with this Space Shot you are truly spoiling us. 10/10, Nine Thumbs Up, Love It!

Rage Against The Machine U.K. Number 1.

Posted in Music, News with tags , , , , , , , on December 21, 2009 by Tickets There

Congratulations to Tracy and Jon Morter for helping music fans across the UK actually accomplish something. Last night, Rage Against The Machine soared to the top of the charts, beating their X-factor rival, Joe … something (McElderry – Ed) to take the Number One Spot for Christmas with their 1992 anthem, Killing In The Name. This was a direct result from Jon and his wife Tracy setting up a Facebook campaign to bring the politically charged noise makers to number 1 and X-Factors four year strangle hold of the coveted spot to an end. Not only is this a sign that people are starting to really hate (or, strongly dislike for those of you with harsh feelings towards the ‘H’ word) the X-Factor (despite the fact that 2009 saw it’s highest TV rating ever), but it’s a testament that people are still prepared to pay for their music…if the cause is right.

We all know that the last ten years of illegal downloading and file sharing have decimated record sales to the point that major, major bands, who are generally guaranteed a pretty good return on any full length player they dish out, have turned their backs on the traditional release in favor of exploring new avenues of releasing music. As for the giant pop churning monster, they’ve hijacked almost every form of major entertainment television, radio and website to deliver packaged deals of the same looking / sounding guys and gals for your viewing, gossip and finally, Listening (cringe) pleasure. Now Tickets There isn’t about to get into attack mode against X-factor styled artists and their fans because that wasn’t the spirit of this campaign, but we are delighted to see X-Factors hold over one of these institutions broken and it was the people, not some massive multi-million pound machine that did it.

To some, this victory will look small and as far as Simon Cowell was concerned, ‘very scrooge like’. Well, Tickets There would like to say sorry to all the naysayers but this is a brilliant achievement and one of the major, major musical highlights of this first millennium decade. It’s rare these days that fans of ‘real’ music come out and show the world they’re still around and in the UK last week, they came out in spades.

Before we finish, Tickets There feels we should remind Mr. Cowell that Scrooge was a character who was rich and powerful and kept it all from himself while many less fortunate, but much more deserving people around him starved. After being visited by three ghosts, Scrooge changed his ways, shared his money with all and everyone lived happily ever after.

Matching this campaign to scrooge is hard to do, but it is alot easier to compare you and your X-Factor Money machine to the Scrooge character. The only difference is, you still haven’t realized you’re business practices, shows and acts are not helping the creative side of music. Not only that, but you defend it and you’ll keep doing it and rather than admitting it’s all about money, you pass it off as ‘making the contestant’s dreams come true’. At least Scrooge didn’t lie about his tactics and meanness. He was famous for being very upfront about his lack of compassion for humanity. Tell me Simon, didn’t you make a name for yourself by using cruel, hurtful remarks about people and their abilities in front of millions and millions of viewers? In fact, isn’t that the main appeal of those shows? (*deleted – witty remark about X-factor rejects being orderd into the poor houses, surplus population..etc)

Why don’t you share that industry money, that power and that influence with bands who work their asses off seven days a week to scrape enough money together just so they can record another track rather than piss it all away on these fleeting acts that server nothing more than to make you, your company and Song BMG a quick buck. That kind of mentality is destroying the music industry and finally the people have said Enough!

Oh, and Simon Cowell – SCrooge (just pointing that out).

Ash – Pripyat (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , , , , , , on December 21, 2009 by Tickets There

These A – Z singles are becoming very comforting. So far we’ve haven’t had any duds and tracks like Return of White Rabbit and Arcadia have already become firm fan favorites and earned permanent positions on the bands future set-lists. As well as them, we’ve had the excellent Tracers, The Dead Disciples, Joy Kicks Darkness (one of TT’s fav’s) and True Love 1980. All great, catchy, hooky repeat phrase, repeat phrase tracks that stand up well against anything Ash have done before.

Now, we’re moving along nicely into F and a wee track called Pripyat which they’ve released a few days after a big push for their H single, Space Shot so Tickets There is thinking they’re going to start focusing the video’s and marketing for key singles along the way rather than give each one the same attention. In all fairness, Pripat’s a little dull in comparison to Space Shot so Tickets There’s hopes for the next single, G aren’t riding high.

The track has the same grandness that we saw on Joy Kicks Darkens and Tracers but it’s lacking that little push that makes Ash tracks great. There is an overall flow and style used across pretty much every single we’ve heard so far in this series but while the others have all shared common traits, they’ve still managed to maintain a uniqueness that makes them stand out as legitimate singles. Unfortunately for Pripyat, it just seems to go with the motions and settle in the background. If this was a traditional album release, Pripyat would be a B-side at best.

Despite our words, Tickets There has heard Space Shot (as can you at www.ash-official.com) and believe us, there’s more good stuff coming from the lads. Stand by for the review.

ABBA More Rock N’ Roll Than KISS?

Posted in Music, News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on December 15, 2009 by Tickets There

Tickets There is troubled. I read about this earlier today and I thought, why bother?. Why bother writing an article about an establishment that flies in the face of everything its origins are based on? Today, The Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame (in Cleveland, Ohio) voted in favor of accepting Genesis (Fair enough), The Stooges (Fair Enough although they were technically punk if you go by definition), Jimmy Cliff (Ska / Reggae singer…..someone want to explain his presence in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame to me?) and the Dancin’ Queens themselves, ABBA into the hall in 2010. These acts (and a couple more, not keeping this long) were voted in ahead of LL Cool J (Fair Enough), Donna Summer (Damn right fair enough), The Red Hot Chilli Peppers (Hmm…little rocky but technically a funk rock band but if the Stooges can swing it, so can the Chilli’s) and finally, the greatest rock n roll phenomenon America has ever and will ever manage to produce, the mighty KISS.

Now, take one stroll down the main page of Tickets There and you’ll see we’re clearly biased. Obviously there is a great love for KISS on this site (and if you couldn’t tell before, then the constant capitalization of their name should spell it out), but TT would hope that people out there, with little or no love for the band can agree that KISS deserves to be included in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame before ABBA. I would hope that every single band in the world that ever used a distortion pedal would be included in the rock n roll hall of fame before ABBA. What’s next? Are they going to start reserving an annual inductee space for the winner of X-Factor?

The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame has made many, many decision mistakes in the past such as Run DMC and Madonna to name just two, but this is an original one. It’s like passing up Aerosmith in favor of Westlife. ABBA may have some of the catchiest wee pop numbers under the sun and no-ones trying to call them a terrible band or anything but they’re not rock n roll. KISS are and they’re good at it.

We’ll stop this rant before it get’s silly (many, many paragraphs and bracket comments deleted since I started) but I’ll say this, KISS are better off. The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is out of touch and the last thing KISS needs is to be associated with that un-creditable institution and we urge them to reject their invite to join, when the offer is eventually made. Follow the Sex Pistols and let them know you don’t care.

(As Fans, Tickets There urges you to join a FACE BOOK campaign called ‘Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame, you can KISS my ass‘ and show them exactly what you think of their decision)

Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax – Shows Announced

Posted in Music, News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on December 15, 2009 by Tickets There

Yes, it’s true, the big four are playing together….twice!

For months, rumors have been flooding the internet that the original icons of thrash metal would unite together for a tour and last night, Metallica confirmed those rumors.

“You’ve been posting and chatting about it for months and we’re here now to confirm it . . . METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH, and ANTHRAX will all share the same stage for the first time EVER! Look for the four of us at the Sonisphere shows in Warsaw, Poland and Prague, Czech Republic on June 16 and 19, 2010, with a few more of the festival dates still in the works. You can be sure these shows won’t be the only ones.”

These shows could be the first step in bringing the four together for a major worldwide tour later in 2010. Currently there are no further details but as always, Tickets There will let you know when we do.

Also, more guests still be announced for both Sonisphere shows….but could you care less? Very few bands they could add to make that bill any better. Lucky bastards over there 😦

HY-GIY?: Bell X1 – Music in Mouth

Posted in Album Review, Hy-Giy, IRISH NOISE!, Music with tags , , , , , , , on December 14, 2009 by Tickets There

Have to take a break from Guns N’ Roses stories and it’s been too long since I revisited some of the finest albums our local acts have released over the years so let’s turn the spotlight on Kildare’s favorite sons, Bell X1.

I first discovered Bell X1 in March, 2003. I remember the date because it was the month Turn launched their second album, Forward in Vicar Street and they roped in the Bellies as support. I wasn’t overly impressed. I’d heard Neither Am I briefly the year before and hadn’t been too impressed by that either (although Man on Mir will always be amazing). That was my first impression. What made its mark was one of my housemates playing White Water Song nonstop for about two months after the gig and then another housemate constantly playing Alphabet Soup on the guitar every time someone blinked. By September I was turning my favor towards the group and that same month I was back in vicar Street to see Turn only this time they were supporting Bell X1 for their Music in Mouth album launch. Turn were great but admittedly, the night belonged to the headliners despite my love for the Kell’s trio and with that, I was hooked.

A few days later I was back in Sligo and saw a copy of Music in Mouth for sale so I bought it, headed to work thinking I’d some fine listening for the evening. Two minutes later I’d managed to bump into Paul Noonan loading gear out of a truck on O’Connell Street, into a tiny little pub called McGarrigles where the band was playing a show to around a hundred people or less. Bell X1 have been one of Tickets There’s favorite Irish bands ever since our first topsy, turvy year together and just two years after our initial encounter, the band were back in Sligo playing top over 5,000 fans in the Radisson Hotel, once again with Turn as support.

Anyway, that’s our original meeting with the band, now it’s time to discuss the music. Bell X1 have four albums, Neither Am I, Flock, Blue Lights on the Runway and our favorite and the subject of this review, Music In Mouth. I’ve picked this one for three reasons. 1, I’m not a massive fan of Flock and for some reason; I just never got into that much. 2, Neither Am I and Blue Lights On The Runway are great but not as good as MIM and 3, it was the album that got me hooked on the band. The styles on Music In Mouth and the song writing show serious improvements from their debut. The excellent Snakes and Snakes isn’t beloved by all but we like it. It’s a real upbeat, hooky number that displays the band’s talent for wacky yet cohesive musicianship, not to mention their always off the wall lyric choices.

The fantastically catchy Alphabet Soup, with its refined banjo / guitar riffs and its instantly memorable choruses follow and its overdriven, stripped back jumble of instruments after the choruses make this song as enjoyable as it is unique. Taking things back quite a distance, Daybreak presents a much more delicate side of the bands song writing. Not only is it one of the nicest songs on the record, it’s one of the nicest songs the band has ever written and anyone who, like Tickets There, has put this on first thing in the morning will know how good it is to wake up to. Lovely harmonies, lovely playing, lovely flow…and the feedback at the end gives you the final kick you need to wake up.

Off course everyone knows the very famous Eve, The Apple of My Eye. Once again it comes from the softer side of the band. What can you say about this song other than its lovely? You can say it was used during a very (searches for the appropriate PG word)…nice moment during the O.C. which ensures it’ll be a classic for many, many men out there for years to come.

This puts us right in the ‘album track’ territory of Music in Mouth. Next to You, West of Her Spine and Bound for Boston Hill all make excellent additions to the record but it’s only when the opening notes of Tongue flare up that you realize just how sharp the Bellies song writing really is. Yes they have the knack to write perfectly sublime, enchanting and atmospheric pieces but, they also have a gift for heavy, loud bruising tracks that incorporate all the traits shown on the lighter material but still manage to kick you in the ass. The next track, White Water Song is another very, very good example of this. Chaotic guitars, bucket loads of O.T.T.-ness, Paul’s frenzied lyrics and style and the massive crunching chorus with spiraling guitar driven choruses launch forward gripping the confused first time listeners who were just warming up to the comfort shown on the rest of the album.

In Every SunFlower see’s a return to the land of album tracks but final song, I’ll See Your Heart and Raise You Mine gives the album on of its true highlights. As loveable and gentle as Eve, The Apple of My Eye but less popular making it just that little bit more special.

So that’s it, our review of our favorite Bell X1 record. Have You Got It Yet? No!! Go get it.

(What a corny way to end but I’ll See Your Heart… is still playing so forgive our soppy little words and child like gramm….I mean innocence.

Posted in Music, News with tags , , , , , , , , , , on December 14, 2009 by Tickets There

First of all, No, we won’t be doing this every time Guns N’ Roses play a show this year. There are other bands we’d like to give attention to. But, Tickets There has a deep rooted love for the most dangerous band in the world and the fact that they’re touring makes us feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside.

Anyways, Guns preformed the second show of their Chinese Democracy World Tour in Seoul, South Korea yesterday, Below is the bands set list from the gig.

So, it’s decade ending time. All the music publications, webzines, blogs, fans everyone with a computer and the ability to type has a list of their top 5, 10, 20, 50, 1,000, 1,000,000 albums of the last ten years and the great, thoughtful, original minds that drive, create, nurture and bring you Tickets There have finally decided we’ll do one to. Sher if everyone else is, why wouldn’t we? Tickets There never claimed (in the last 30 minutes) to be original or independent so we’ll follow the herd with the list thing. Not really sure what’s the point since we probably only bought 20 albums in the last ten years that were actually released in that time.

Instead of doing the 1 – 50 order, we’re putting them in chronologically.  This is a basic, hastily put together history of what shaped the amazing, the incredible, the mind-bendingly stunning tastes held by all at Tickets There HQ.

(Please don’t give me hell for Testament, but that album deserves to be on this list, even though it wasn’t released in the time frame. Damn calendar counter counters!!)

The Aftermath Play Academy 2, Feb 12th 2010

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, News with tags , , , , , , , on December 9, 2009 by Tickets There

What makes Tickets There happy? The Aftermath makes T.T. happy. If you haven’t heard them yet, The Aftermath are one of Irelands leading pop rock groups with enough hook filled, catchy as hell material to keep you entertained for many a cold month this Christmas. Their debut album, Friendlier Up here, was release in 2008 and it managed to spawn three top 20 singles including the scrumptious Are You Not Wanting me Yet.

If you like well written, tightly preformed, instantly lovable pop rock (without the overzealous cheese indulgence many of the genres bands…ehm, indulge in), then buy their album (reviewed here), love their songs and go check them out when they play The Academy 2, Feb 12th 2010.

Tickets are on sale now priced €12.00 from Ticketmaster outlets nationwide and www.ticketmaster.ie

Whelan’s: 1989 – 2009 Special Birthday Gig Tonight!

Posted in Music, News with tags , , , , on December 7, 2009 by Tickets There

It’s Whelan’s birthday today and Tickets There, one of Irelands leading semi-part time, underground, can’t be bothered half the time champions of the Irish Independent Music Scene decided we couldn’t let the event pass without saying anything. Accustomed as we are to public blogging, we still aren’t any good at it, but we do our best….sometimes.

Love it or hate it, Whelan’s is one of the corner stone’s of Irish music. It’s as important to us as CBGB’s is to New York, as the Cavern to Liverpool and The Astoria to London (FYI, all three of those venues have been demolished / moved in the past three years). Like the Roisin Dubh in Galway, Whelan’s has always been a Mecca for new Irish talent and practically from the moment it opened its doors, it’s been at the forefront of the Dublin music scene. The dream of headlining or even gracing it’s stage is one shared by many and local bands such as The Frames, Paddy Casey, Mic Christopher, Josh Ritter, Mark Geary and Damien Rice cut their teeth on Whelan’s stage over the years with many of them becoming regular punters in the pub on their days off.

All ranges of Dublin music fans drink and rock out in Whelan’s on any given night. On any occasion you’ll see indie nerds, punk rock fans, emo kids, dance fanatics, traditional Irish heads and singer songwriter souls floating about the place, soaking up its boisterous atmosphere, its reliable pints, the heat from the various fire places and the music, always the music.

Tickets There has fond memories of Whelan’s from the six years we’ve been drinking there. While we wouldn’t be regulars by any standards, we’ve gotten the chance to see acts like Kevin Burke, Christy Moore, Concerto for Constantine, Humanzi, Oliver Cole, Jape, Dave Geraghty, The Future Kings of Spain, Cathy Davey, Paddy Casey, TKO, Leopold, Ham Sandwich and many, many  more rocking the place to its foundations in that time. There’s lots of memorable stories like New Years Eve a couple of years ago when Jape missed the countdown because everyone on stage had forgotten to wear a watch, or when Humanzi played the upstairs venue last year and nearly made the floor collapse from the crowd going absolutely mental. The place was like a bouncing castle and I still can’t believe the wood held firm.

My fondest memory of Whelan’s was a show by an American folk singer called Jim Page, who of course shares a name with a certain Led Zeppelin member. About ten minutes into a conversation with his wife, the ball dropped. Wasn’t long after asking her if ‘Jimmy and Robert (Plant)still toured together’ that the look was given and Tickets There suddenly realized the feckin’ ejjet who convinced us to go had gotten the billing wrong…ever so slightly. Ah well, turned out to be one of the best shows I’ve ever seen in there. There’s lots more but that’s enough for now. Everyone has their own fond memories of Whelan’s and Tickets There would like to think in another twenty years, we’ll all have alot more.

Make sure you Check out their Website for a chance to win tickets to tonight’s show which features the following acts,

Luka Bloom
Maria Doyle Kennedy
Juliet Turner
Gemma Hayes
The Flaws
Paddy Casey
David Kitt
Ham Sandwich.

Happy Birthday guys!!

MySpace Review – The Bloody Shanks

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, MySpace Review with tags , , , , , on December 7, 2009 by Tickets There

Been awhile since Tickets There got round to a MySpace Review. We lost the fire there for a wee while, damn American’s annoying us, but as always, Tickets There has regrouped and we’re ready to start bringing you some of the freshest and best talents from around the country…..whenever we find them or, like The Bloody Shanks, when they find us. There’s nothing we like more than downright dirty rock n roll (may have mentioned this before, 1,000 times is enough TT – Ed) and The Bloody Shanks obviously take their lead from classic rock n roll bands of the past. So, without further ado, let’s see what they’re like (they’re pretty damn sweet – Ed)…(Damn it, shut the hell up biotch and let us review it! – TT).

As usual, we’ve haven’t heard the bands EP (because they just finished recording it) and we haven’t seen them live.

Girl (Leave Me Alone) gets the ball rolling and you could be forgiven for thinking it’s a classic Stones song covered by an amazing Kinks tribute band with Irelands leading Mick Jagger / sixties front man impersonator. The good news is, the song’s new, the bands Irish and they’re kick ass. It’s short, to the point, catchy and has attitude, swagger and general sleaze rock pouring out of it. Great wee number and more than enough to praise the band straight away. This is what rock is meant to sound like; it’s how the whole concept was perfected.

Ugly Situation is next and before going on, I have to mention that the songs on MySpace are only rough demo’s but you really should pop over and hear them before the band upload their new recordings,. The dirty, gritty sound really suits the tracks, especially when the bass lines on Ugly Situation kicks in. It’s got that classic, Elvis film, swinging sixties, surfing kind of sound. Organ, basic, catchy riffs, sweet bass lines and swaggering vocals. Another winner. The vocals are a little different though and remind me more of Female Hercules than the Stones. Nice to hear diversity and another firm thumbs up for the boys.

Last, but far from least is She Don’t Know. Its formula and style is pretty much the same as the other two but why break it if it ain’t broken? Like Sounds of System Breakdown, Sweet Jane and Cheap Freaks, Tickets There can’t say enough about how much we like this band. It’s simple, it’s down to earth, rock n roll from the soil for anyone out there who still enjoys some good old fashioned, uncomplicated music. Expect to see a review of the bands new EP as soon as it’s out.

Ash – The Dead Disciples (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , , , , on December 7, 2009 by Tickets There

God, I can’t believe how quickly these fortnights are going by. It seems like only yesterday Tracers came out and all of a sudden we’ve got another one! The fifth single of Ash’s A – Z series, The Dead Disciples is now available and it’s definitely worth making the trip to ASH-OFFICIAL.COM to hear it.

Opening with a nice gritty guitar, the song bursts forth with a tight mixture of electro-rock styled guitars grinding out some sweet ‘in your face whiteboy’ riffs. The song is one of those heavier, grunge styled Ash moments. The verse is stripped back with a tasty dirty bass line and some naughty little pulls from the guitar and Tim’s punk rock style vocals. Unfortunately the chorus, while still catchy and belting, is a bit over harmonized for the verse which stops it from competing with past grunge glories like A Life Less Ordinary and Innocent Smile, but that doesn’t stop it from being one of the catchiest singles of the series.

Overall all it’s another winner. Tickets There can say happily that we prefer it to Tracers and would currently rank it second overall behind Arcadia. Now, that’s enough from me, go check it out and see what you think. Until next time, (F), have a pleasant two weeks.
