Hellfire()Sounds Review: OVEROTH

Welcome to Hellfire()Sounds, Tickets There’s brand new metal review series. Like the Irish Noise and MySpace Reviews of the past, we’ll be jumping around MySpace’s, Facebook profiles, Soundcloud’s….etc. for the best new / old / unheard / overplayed metal we can find. Today we kick off the series with Overoth, whose five MySpace tracks have been doing the job all the way to the bank this morning.

Overoth have promised a comeback this year with new material well under way. In the meantime, metal fans would do well to revisit the Belfast band’s debut album Kingdom of Shadows (2010) and their debut E.P. Death Personified (2007) which are both represented in the bands MySpace player. Kicking off with ‘Upon The Alter’, Overoth’s present a cryptic-doom laden sound with creeping evil guitars, brawling vocals and an all-consuming aggression. Against a back drop of impending doom, Andy Ennis’ vocals bellow forth with a crisp, convincing sound needed to carry death metal and brand its mark upon the listener. ‘I Am Evil, I Am All’ (killer name) again shows the quality of the band’s debut album with dense wall of rhythm heavy sounds, while ‘Death Personified’ comes spiralling out with a renegade twirling nightmare feel. ‘Suffering of the Detained’ and ‘Oath of the Flesh’ again deliver a faster, sharper sound than that seen on the Kingdom of Shadows tracks on offer, but you’d miss the apocalyptic backdrop the band apparently mastered in the three years between both releases….uhm, release.

IRISH NOISE! – The Plea (MySpace)

*Stretches fingers, cracks knuckles and so on. It’s good to be back, especially since we’ve accumulated a wealth of bands we think you’re going to thoroughly enjoy. As promised, we’re aiming today’s IRISH NOISE review at Donegal locals, The Plea (as seen supporting Ash in Whelan’s). The four piece have been around for over two years and already have a debut album under belts, an impressive list of production collaborators and a very healthy looking future ahead of them. Good for them, better for us. They claim The Doors, The Beatles and The (R) Stones as influences, their sound has been polished by Cenzo Townsend (other credits include U2, New Order and Blur) and judging by their live performance, they have as impressive a catalogue of material you’re likely to find in these here parts. Ladies and gentlemen, you’re new favourite band – The Plea!

The last statement may be a bit strong from a reviewer who’s only caught one gig and listened to no less than two tracks on their MySpace (Would someone please explain the Facebook player please?) but we’re standing by it! ‘Praise Be’ is first up and it’s also the one we’re most familiar. The band recently included it on a special split E.P. with Ash and LaFarro for their recent Irish shows togeather. An excellent number rooted in psychedelic, dance-pop rock that’s centred around the vocals and a thumping drum beat. The guitar adds nice decoration against the beatin’ bass in the background. Yep, it’ll do!

‘I Am The Miracle’ is up next (very sadly the last song in the player), even better than the real thing. Style, structure and flow are much the same as Praise Be, perhaps not good to have both on the player as it doesn’t show much diversity, but; as a wise Tickets There once said, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. Just as enjoyable either way and another push to get more of their material.

Great band, well worth checking out and one (never get tired of saying this) you’ll be hearing more of on Tickets There in the future. Visit their Official MySpace @ myspace.com/thepleamusic

MySpace Review – Land Lovers

Ye can all thank / blame Land Lovers for our 400^th sudden stop in updates last week. We found the Dublin band while we were pile driving through some home-grown talent MySpace’s and were brought to a grinding halt after one go of their player. At first ‘Children / Pop / Showtunes’ seemed like something we were going to really regret giving the time to but after several million spins over the last week, we’re ready to share them with ye all.

We’ve never seen them or heard their album…yet!

The Cinema Bell sounds exactly like we were expecting. Clappy, silly keyboards and poppy noises but we stayed and ‘struggled on’ because the vocals are strong and the song is nice and catchy. Multiple spins has brought it closer to us but we’re still standing there with a wee stick between us so that style never becomes too comfortable. Immovable Feast is the one that really threw is. Total change in styles and a feeling of instant maturity to the writing, very strong with an excellent flow.

Paddy Works The Maglev follows the same style Immovable Feet but includes a more Irish traditional style of structure meaning any of ye out there that enjoy the start / stop style of the verse may like trad one day. A nice song that discusses present day Ireland but manages to avoid the clichés and awful comedy pitfalls that many others are throwing out at the moment. Possibly our favourite of the bunch.

No. 1 Communiqué changes the style again and gives the band a much darker tone. Not a whole pile to writer here. Lyrics are darker, music is darker and there’s a great mix of styles but the overall delivery is pretty unique to Land Lovers. Is that amateur-music speech jargon? We think so. Don’t really want to write this review while listening so just go and visit their MySpace and enjoy. You won’t regret it, honest!

MySpace (Sample) Review – Two Door Cinema Club

We’re scouring the internet, listening to as many major underground bands from 2010 as possible (yes, yes we are aware we’d be better off looking for the next thing rather than the stuff everyone’s already heard – thanks!) and Two Door Cinema Club’s name kept popping up last year. Yesterday, we finally decided to see why exactly they were one of the most searched bands of last year. Unfortunately, we never did get it and any hope of understanding was dashed by the fact that their MySpace player is full of samples. Defiant as we are, we refused to search for another streaming service and have now decided to do a review of the MySpace samples. Why bother? Cause we’re not listening to the other name on our list.

We’ve never seen them live or heard their album. Let the Review Sample begin!

Sample 1 – Cigarettes In The Theatre: Chongo pop, Silly. Guitars sound good for a moment at the start, lyrics are not our cup of tea.
Sample 2 – Come Back Home: Sounds better, improvement on the vocals. Generic though.
Sample 3 – Do You Want It All: Sounds like it would get very annoying, very quickly.
Sample 4 – This is the life: Hmmm…vocals are disappointing again in this snip
Sample 5 – Something Good Can Work: Vocals and lyrics this time. Don’t like the OhOh (we’ve actually heard this before, must have been a single)
Sample 6 – I Can Talk: This one sounds quite good. Vocals are a better, not annoying and catchy!
FULL SONG – Undercover Martyn: Eh, not our thing at all. Sounds like Snow Patrol except better (anything without Snow Patrol’s direct involvement is always better). Not too bad, nothing to hate but it’s just too plain.
Sample 7 – What You Know: Same again, but a little better thank Undercover Martyn.
Sample 8 – Eat That Up, It’s Good For You: Sounds avoidable.
Sample 9 – You Are Not Stubborn: Don’t think they’re for us folks. Lets call it a review.

MySpace Review – O Emperor

That’s right, another one of Ireland’s hotly tipped underground acts we’ve never seen or heard before. What do we actually do with our time you ask? Well, we drink a fair bit (although not that much, only 3 times this month including new years eve), watch a lot of TV, work on our paint city and listen to a lot of Megadeth, Def Leppard, Guns N’ Roses and read. Not much time left in that hectic, crazy schedule to be going out and just, *tusks / grunt-laugh/shakes head and frowns* listen to music for the hell of it! Anyways, we’re here now and that’s the important thing and we have some good news! We’re liking O Emperor a lot more than we thought we would. Now for ya!

Never seen them, haven’t heard their album.

Don’t Mind Me reminds us of a song you’d hear in one of those eighties New York films with driving or a small bar. Starts nicely and improves with age. For a gentle, serene mood this is your baby. Po is a liverier wee number. Faster, louder but still nice and relaxed (a word that will be repeated in this review). Sedalia is again ‘relaxed’ (real journalists / bloggers manage to use a little thing called vocabulary guys. Just a hint – Ed), nice on the ears and a very pleasant experience. Recommended so far.

The Fat Lady starts the second half of tunes in an even more sombre, quiet and uneventful (not necessarily a negative use of the word uneventful, just not a whole pile of complexity or action in this case) than the previous three. Very deep reaching piece of music that some have no doubt been captivated and transformed by. Tickets There is in quite a chirpy mood today so no depression here. Still quite enjoyable though and it’ll definitely be on our ‘depressed as hell – need reconciliation and / or companionship from non-in the room human’ list. Heisenberg follows much the same suit except it’s a little too over the top on the dull factor. Quite short which we always see a bonus point to songs we don’t like but just too sad. We need a little piece along the lines of Po now.

To The Sea is last and it’s got life! It’s no Springsteen now, leppin’ about the place or anything but it’s got blood in it’s veins and delivered enough of what we were looking for to finish things on a good note. O Emperor, recommended. If you’re having a nice relaxing Monday, then give them a go,. If you’re stressed out, give them a go. If you’re massively under the weather and ‘bad thoughts’ are spiralling out of control in your warped head, then have a listen to Whitesnake. When you’re all happy and better, then give O Emperor a go. O Emperor MySpace

MySpace Review – Halves

Still a good few names on the Choice Music short-list we never bothered our arses listening to this year. You take a few months off and all of a sudden the underground is ablaze with names and faces you’ve never heard off. Unfortunately for Tickets There, 90% of the time when we make the effort we’re disappointed. Today’s band now join that 90%, introducing Halves to Tickets There.

Never seen them live, never will either.

Things did not start off well with this one. May Your Enemies Never Find begins like any other ‘play this for your children before they go to bed to really make sure they ain’t getting up again’ style tracks our young, lifeless generation of songwriters indulge in. I’d love to say it massively improves but the echoey, supposedly ‘atmospheric’ vocals, the boring, impotent music and structures remain very placid for the first half. Then out of no where – we get life. It disappears again and low and behold, comes back for a big loud sleek sounding indie ending. Nothing fantastic but better on hindsight. The kind of track that could be used to advertise Eternal Sunshine of A Spotless Mind.

Blood Branches unfortunately doesn’t manage any sort of a turn around. It’s just as boring as it sounds at the beginning right through till the end. I see what the band are aiming for but it’s not hitting home. It’s Sunday, we have headphones on. No distractions or anything but we’re not moved an ounce. Others like it, Tickets There and the majority don’t.

While May Your Enemies Never Find (you?) had the saviour, Blood Branches was short and lacked lyrics, Medals has little to offer. We’re leaving it there folks. Tickets There isn’t meant to do scathing reviews and if we’re going to get back into them, there’s worse out there than Halves. Our final word is simple, this music is boring. Think it’s time the world stopped trying to take itself so seriously and had some fun again with fun people and not be subjected to this moaning, woe is me, life is so miserable and broken hearted ….lalalal. God people. Try to enjoy yourselves.

MySpace Review – Cap Pas Cap

Right, enough excuses and delays. It’s time to get back to Tickets There’s roots rather than fecking editor Rob’s passions. Cap Pas Cap is a band that bored us to tears when we saw them live. Awful stuff, such a dreadfully boring show. Think they supported Jape in Tripod, but don’t quote us on that. As always with Tickets There, its second chance time so we decided Cap Pas Cap needed another looksy. Without basing the sound on performance this time, it’s actually quite ok, for what it is. In theory this shouldn’t be a MySpace review as we have seen them but it’s Friday, stick your rules!

The whole Joy Division revival thing that’s going on is getting a tad stale. Music minus the soul that makes it legendary but guised in layers of ‘this is actually something deep, deep, deep below the surface’. It’s so deep no human ear can’t detect it, that’s why we only have a few hundred part-time fans, cause they’re the ones who get it. Oh, Sex is On Fire, lets dance! What does all that rubbish mean? It means bands are able to pass of sub-standard, repetitive, entertainment lacking / un-heartfelt mush and claim it to be this enormously complex, thronged with diversity despite sounding like it was written in three seconds Here’s the thing though (don’t ya know), it’ll be respected 20 years in the future because this sh*t right here is well before it’s time.

Utter rubbish and it’s our duty (volunteers, not that anyone actually wants us doing this) to wade through all the *BS and find songs/bands that accidently slip up and write something that comes close to enjoyable music. If you’re in the right mood, Mirrors from Cap Pas Cap will help. Imagine being heavily buzzed with a whitey in a Dutch nightclub toilet with heavy trance music blaring in and no water available. If this song came on, you would kill yourself. If you’re perfectly fine and just a bit drunk around 1.30ish in the morning, then Mirrors sums up the ‘in the thick of it now’ feeling you get when the safety net of another hour or two drinking is left but you have reached the point of happy out.

‘In The Thick of it’ done, not yet. The house / pop / electro styling’s of Friends will liven things back up a bit. Can’t imagine watching it live with any great interest but hand this to the DJ and there will be muchos schmoozey posing and trance style mock dance shapes galore in Whelan’s. Not a bad tune but very, very downbeat so if you’re happy out in mid-town, find some KISS. Wait till she dumps you before hitting this needle.

IRISH NOISE! The Danger Is – All For Gold (MySpace Review)

Finding info on The Danger Is, is one of the toughest things we’ve had to do here at Tickets There. But after an amazing show from the lovely Niamh Danger and her band at last week’s Temple House Music Festival, we just had to write something about them. There’s only one song on their MySpace at the moment but fortunately it’s a little Gem.

All For Gold is a beauty of a song. Fast, energetic, friendly, warm and completely irresistible. Niamh’s voice oozes with soothing character and talent, all nicely wrapped in a very well written basket of heaviness, calm and slight hints of fifties ballad pop. There’s several different landing spots in the songs structure which make the song fill out it’s time extremely well. If we write any more we’ll end waffling.

Excellent song and a band that is shooting higher and higher up the Tickets There Likes list. Check them out for yourself by Clicking Here (The Danger Is MySpace), come back and pat us on the back for giving you a lovely treat today*

* Unless by some small chance you find things for yourself on the internet and heard this song and the band 1,500 times before. Seen them so many times you can play their set on guitar without ever having a lesson and you’re almost engaged to Niamh herself. Then there’s no need to pat us…ah well.

MyTuneRox! – New Music based Social Networking Site Launching Soon

Bandcamp may be taking over the reins of leading online musical display case for bands these days but the old social networking model isn’t over yet. MyTuneRox is the latest in online music networking and it’s all based right here in Ireland.

If you’ve used MySpace before you know the drill. Pics, friends, blogs and tunes. It’s aimed mostly at Irish bands from what we’ve gathered and there’s almost 200 bands already signed up.

The site kicks off officially launches next month but the beta version is up and running now. Even Tickets There has found time to throw a profile together…but for the life of us, we cannot figure out how to link to our home page so we’ll update the Follow Tickets There widget as soon as we do.
