Interview with Liz Is Evil’s Jay Bagnall

Posted in General Tickets There Blog, Interview, Music with tags , , on May 28, 2011 by ticketssteve

Jay Bagnall is fast becoming one of the most respected drummers in Ireland.  Best known for his part in Punk rockers Liz Is Evil, and for reclaiming the drum solo. Liz Is Evil’s debut album ‘Failed Philosophy’ appeared in Dan Hegarty’s list of Top Irish Albums of 2010. While more recently they have opened for  The Beat.  We caught up with him to talk about all things Evil, and all things drum.

TT: What attracted you to the drums in the first place?

JB: “When I was younger, I was just attracted to the idea of hitting things, didn’t matter what it was. Chairs, tables, trees….I just hit them. When I saw a drum kit for the first time, I was just astounded at how big they were, I didn’t even know what each drum was called……I was just allowed to hit them. From then on, I knew I wanted to play drums.”

TT: How old where you when you first picked up the sticks?

JB: “I was probably 6, or 7 when I got my first drum kit for Christmas. I remember before I had my first kit, being allowed into a friends’ house to play drums after school every so often. It was great, I couldn’t even reach the kick pedal at the time! I’m glad I got to start young, it helped immensely.”

TT: Did it come naturally to you?

JB: “I remember being able to play the intro to “Paradise City” fairly good when I picked up sticks for the first time. As I said, I used to hit and tap things all the time, so rhythm came naturally to me. I used to dance alot when I was a kid too, so that probably helped my overall sense of timing, and rhythm in general. My Mam and Dad got me a bigger kit two weeks after they got me my first one, so I must have been doing something right!”

TT: Who were your original influences?

JB: “When I was younger, my Mam and Dad used to play all sorts of music in the house. From pop, to rock, to punk, to dance music. So musically, I had a mixed bag of influences to start off with. The first drummer I remember being truly inspired by was Animal from The Muppets. I remember watching an episode, and just being awestruck that a puppet could play drums! Seriously though, the first drummer that inspired me would probably have been Steven Adler from G’n’R. I loved the sound of the drums on Appetite, even as a kid who hadn’t a clue about sound, or drumming in general. I remember just drumming along to anything I could when I was younger. I used to do a lot of air drumming too, which helped. Later influences when I got a little older would have been John Otto, Chad Smith, Dave Silveria and most of the rock and metal drummers of the 90’s. Now that I’m a little older, I listen to all sorts of music, so drummers like Buddy Rich, Steve Smith, Tony Williams, and Neil Peart have really opened my eyes to a lot of things.”

TT: What was the first album/song you bought was it purely for the drumming?

JB: “I remember buying Limp Bizkit’s Chocolate Starfish album when I started getting pocket money….I was blown away by their drummer John Otto and what he could do. That was the first album I’d bought, and owned, when I was around 13 or 14. I didn’t really need to buy a lot of music when I was younger, my folks had tonnes of music in the house for me to listen to. I’d just go through what they had, pop it on, and drum all day.”

TT: What was the first gig you attended?

JB: “My Mam used to sing in a band when she was younger. I used to get to go to her gigs, which was great, because I was allowed to mess around on the drums when they weren’t playing. But the first gig I attended, on my own, was Ozzfest back in ’02. It was such an amazing experience, to see all of my favourite bands and drummers in one huge, big festival. That gig showed me how loud, and proud you could play drums.”

TT: What was the name of your first band and were you any good?

JB: “Wow….The first band I formed was a band called Alloy’d when I was around 12. It was a metal band. It was me, and my friend Chris on guitar. We thought we were amazing, I remember having decent chops back then, but not enough to play really heavy metal, which is what I was beginning to get into at that age. We eventually let my brother Lee in to play. We got progressively better once we started jamming more frequently. I still play in that band to this day. We’ve come a long way since rehearsing in my bedroom all those years ago.”

TT: When and where did you play your first gig?

JB: “I was asked by a friend of mine’s older brother to join a band with him. They used to do cover songs, and a few originals. My first gig with them was when I was maybe…..13 or 14, in Eamonn Dorans. That was around 11 years ago now. I started gigging when I was younger, I was lucky to be asked to join bands that had musicians that were older than me. I remember doing a drum solo at one of my Mams gigs’ when I was really young too. Can’t remember how old I was though.”

TT: Was there a eureka moment when you said this is what I want to do for a living?

JB: “When I used to rehearse in my bedroom as a kid, I used to play as loud as I could so everyone on the road could hear me. I used to hope that someone would hear me and think I was good enough to join a band, so there was never really a eureka moment. The desire has always been there, ever since I had my first kit. I wanted to be a drummer, making a living from it or not, I knew I just wanted to do it.”

TT: How many bands have you been in before and how many are you currently in?

JB: “I honestly can’t put a number on how many bands I’ve been in. I’ve been very lucky in that so many people have asked me to play in bands with them. I’ve always been juggling bands since I started gigging, I prefer it that way. If you’re not busy, you’re bored, as far as I’m concerned. Currently, I’m playing in 5 bands, Liz Is Evil, IAmACarCrash, Alloy’d, The Nom Nom Noms, and one unnamed covers band. Some rehearse and gig more than others, so it’s not too bad juggling between them. I enjoy drumming, so any chance I get to play, I’m all over it.”

TT: Are you a drum whore then?

JB: “That’s something I’ve been called many, many times, among other things……”

TT: What did you learn from each of the experiences?

JB: “In each band I’ve been in, I’ve taken something from it. Whether it’s how to play odd time signatures, how to hit harder (or softer….), or even the business side of the music industry, I’ve taken something away from each and every gig, rehearsal, and experience with a band. I’m like a sponge, I just soak up as much information as I possibly can when I’m drumming, or watching another drummer, or musician, play.”

TT: Do you drum in your sleep or have drumming dreams?

JB: “People always tell me to stop drumming, or tapping when I’m not behind a kit….it’s infectious. It’s a serious problem that I have, I can’t help it. I have had some weird drumming dreams, and woken up saying ‘Damn……I need help!’. Drumming is such a huge part of my life, that I’d be a little worried if I didn’t have dreams about it now and then.”

TT: What is your favourite drum beat and why?

JB: “I absolutely love the simplicity of Come Together by The Beatles, but then again love the ferociousness and complexity of Danny Carey’s drum solo in Forty Six and Two, by Tool. My favourite though, would have to be John Otto’s drumming on Re-Arranged by Limp Bizkit. His feel, and pocket on that song are unparallelled in my opinion. He throws ghost notes all over the place, displaces the beat here and there. To this day I’m still awestruck by it. There are plenty of other beats that I love, but I would honestly be all day talking about them.”

TT: Who is your favourite drummer and why?

JB: “John Otto, without a doubt. He’s been a huge inspiration on me. I love other drummers like Gavin Harrison, Joey Jordison, Stewart Copeland……I listen to any drummer who can play well, and knows what they’re doing, even if I don’t particularly like the song.”

TT: Do you play and other instruments?

JB: “I’m learning how to play guitar, and bass at the moment. I can play a tiny bit of keyboard too. I have a good understanding of chords, and scales, I just haven’t been able to put them into practice yet. I do a little singing too.”

TT: Are you a frustrated songwriter?

JB: “Absolutely. I have so many ideas in my head, but can’t quite communicate them just yet. Someday, I’ll be able to write, and perform my own song.”

TT: Will we ever see you do a Dave Grohl and front a band or solo project?

JB: “That is something I’d be very interested in doing. I love Dave Grohl, and his approach to music, and drumming. He’s fantastic. One of my biggest inspirations, also.”

TT: Why is drumming dismissed by the mass media when it is one of most important components in popular music?

JB: “I think drummers get a bad wrap because in some regards we’re still considered ‘just the drummer’. I’m very lucky, in that I rarely get treated that way. If you think about it, songs like Sunday, Bloody Sunday, or Give It Away Now wouldn’t be the songs they are without those memorable drum intro’s. I think the drums in a song are just as important as the melody. You dance, and tap along to a song just as much as you would hum, or sing it. I hate the idea that good drumming doesn’t get as much respect as a really catchy hook. I love catchy lyrics, and great melodies, but when people tell me that the drums in a song aren’t nearly as important as everything else, it gets on my nerves. Drummers don’t get treated as bad now though, I guess. There’s plenty of drummers out there fronting bands now, I love knowing that the front man of a band is a drummer, or that the drummer is the focus of a band. That being said, I don’t think drumming is the only part of music I love, I just don’t like when people disregard it as something that can be done by a machine, or that anyone can play drums.”

TT: Have you done much session work and are you available for session work?

JB: “I’ve done a few sessions here and there, and I most certainly am available for work. I get called on to do live gigs, or reherse with bands, and help with arrangements of songs. I’d love to do more recording work though.”

TT: Who would you like to work with then?

JB: “Anyone who’ll have me. That’s the honest to God’s truth.”

TT: What advice would you give any budding drummers?

JB: “Stay fit is one priority I can’t stress enough, especially if you’re a rock drummer. If you don’t have the stamina to play then you’re leaving yourself short, because you can’t devote your full energy into the music. Practice, practice, practice! The great thing about drumming is that you can literally practice anywhere, anytime. Don’t listen when people tell you to stop tapping. Build your drumming repertoire by listening to as much music as you can, and bring it into your style. Just be yourself when you play, don’t try and play like anyone else, because you aren’t them, you’re you. Don’t get frustrated if you can’t play a particular song, or beat, always know that you will eventually be able to do it, it just takes time. I could go on all day talking about this, but one thing that I’d say to anyone who wants to play drums – LISTEN to the musicians around you, and don’t let your ego get in the way of the music. Oh, and look after your ears, believe me……”

TT: Whats happening next with Liz is Evil?

JB: “At the moment, we’re promoting our album ‘Failed Philosophy’ which is available in stores, and on iTunes now. We have a few gigs lined up for March, and April. Check out our Facebook page for dates, and venues. Hope to see you there!”

Feel the excitement building? Anyone who was there last year is and with just over two weeks left until launch, Temple House Festival fever has well and truly begun.

Over one hundred incredible bands, 4 stages, countless events and quirks, a medieval village, an arts trail, excellent food and a thousand other attractions, all set over a glorious June bank holiday weekend. Top that with amazing grounds, no major queuing and excellent organization, you’d be mad to miss it. Also it’s set in Co. Sligo so you can’t go too wrong.

Tickets are selling like hot cakes and Tickets There decided it was time to give you a quick preview of just some of the great bands booked for this years event.

Friday: June 10th

ASH (Bavaria Main Stage)

What can anyone say about the incredible Downpatrick pop rock trio that hasn’t already been said a thousand times before? Ash have been one of the highest ranking staples of the Irish and indeed, international music scene for the better part of two decades. From the release of their massively acclaimed album, 1977 in… 1996 to their trail blazing A-Z series, Ash have lead the way for Irish alternative rock and have remained one of the most influential bands ever to emerge out of Northern Ireland.

The Walls (Bavaria Main Stage)

Since the demise of The Stunning in the nineties, Steve and Joe Wall have been using their time very wisely. Under The Walls banner, they’ve released two records, Hi-LO and New Dawn Breaking and for the past two years, the band have been sporadically playing live while recording their third album, Stop The Lights, which is due out later this year. Armed with an adventurous new live show, a set-list packed with enchanting new material and old favourites, The Walls are well and truly on their way to chart storming and a slot in every homes CD rack. Not one you’ll want to miss on Friday.

Fighting With Wire (Bavaria Main Stage)

One of our MySpace finds and an excellent live act. Taking the stage just before the mighty Ash, Fighting With Wire are an exciting new Irish band that are promised to deliver an excellent set. Their style will also fit in nicely with their headliners so Ash fans, don’t miss them.

Ryan Sheridan (Acoustic Stage– Walled Garden ).

One of the best up and coming songwriters in Ireland at the moment. Ryan’s performances have been landing him a lot of attention recently and soon his name will be everywhere. Temple House have Ryan on a lovely, secluded acoustic stage in a lovely garden away from the packed main stage arena so take this opportunity to check him out before he returns as a headliner next year.

ALSO

We’re going easy on ye for now, what with all the camping gear you’ll be lugging, tent pitching and so on that’ll fill up your morning but don’t dare finish up the Friday without checking out The Flaws, Kanyu Tree and Preachers Son (EDIT: Preachers Son have been moved from Friday to Saturday and will now be playing the main stage at 5:00pm)

Saturday: June 11th

Kerbdog (Bavaria Main Stage)

Saturday sees one of the most exciting events of the whole festival, the reunion of the legendary Kerbdog! That’s right, Cormac Battle and the lads will be taking the stage and belting out some of the biggest alt-rock hits any Irish band has ever produced. Sine the bands 1998 split they’ve reformed a few times. Make sure you catch this gig or you may not get another chance. (Also…they’re bloody savage).

The Fallen Drakes (The Music Maker Stage)

One of the biggest success stories from the Irish music scene and one that keeps on going. The Fallen Drakes have only been together for little over a year but already they’ve landed gigs at the O2 Arena and R.D.S. Outdoor Arena (supporting The Commitments and Bon Jovi respectively). When bands like this are on the up and up, you know it’s going to be a show to remember.

Land Lovers (Bavaria Main Stage)

They’ll be on good an early so don’t spend the whole night partying with Ash. The excellent Land Lovers came to our attention many months back and managed to sneak their way into Tickets There’s own personal daily rotation. Wait for the live version of Immovable Feet and you’ll be glad you took the time to see them.

The Danger Is (The Music Maker Stage)

Tickets There were fortunate enough to discover this amazing, talented, all round lovely lady last year and ever since then we’ve have been quite vocal about our love for her music. With a few choices on the market, an EP and a handful of singles, Niamh and her band, The Danger Is will arrive at Temple house and blow you out of the tent. Possibly our strongest recommendation of the weekend.

Mike Joyce (DJ Set) (The Music Maker Stage)

Former Smiths drummer, Mike Joyce is popping into Temple House be this years Peter Hook, He’ll be playing a DJ set at The Music Maker stage on Saturday night so if you’re not a fan of Whipping Boy or the Stero MC’s, you’ll know where to go. Last year Temple House had the legendary Peter Hook doing roughly the same thing and you couldn’t have asked for a better end to the second day. This year Mike will will be ensuring the party doesn’t manage to slip away.

Sunday: June 12th

Aslan (Bavaria Main Stage)

When running the search on Tickets There for ‘Aslan’ results, I was disappointed that this site has never devoted an article to the dublin legends. By far one of the most successful home grown bands we’ve ever produced and standard setters in the live arena. Led by the infamous Christy Dignam, Aslan have been rocking Irish stages since the early eighties and three decades later little has changed. Hits like ‘Lucy Jones Part 2’, ‘Crazy World’, ‘This Is’ and ‘Rainman’ have endeared them to hearts of thousand of Irish people ensuring packed houses where ever they play. Whether you’ve ever been a fan or not, Aslan are more than worth checking in on – no matter what else is on.

Sweet Jane (Bavaria Main Stage)

After releasing one of the most successful independent Irish albums of 2010, Sweet Jane have turned into an unstoppable touring machine. Their songs are fused with energy last seen on the seventies and their appeal is spreading wider. Mainland Europe, the U.K. and America have brought them an impressively large international fan base which continues to grow. They’re taking the main stage on the final night and are sure to deliver one of the festivals best sets.

The Riptide Movement (The Music Maker Stage)

The Riptide Movement have been firm favorites on Tickets There for a long time. Their second album is set to emerge later this year but already they’ve released two crackin’ singles from it and have taken Ireland by storm. Their repeated appearances on Grafton street, not to mention their constant touring has brought them firmly into the public eye and things are only getting better. Last week it was confirmed they would be one of two Irish bands supporting Bon Jovi when they hit the RDS next month. They rocked Temple House last year and you can damn well bet they’ll do it again in two weeks.

Oddsocks Revival (The Music Maker Stage)

One of Sligo’s own bands, Oddsocks Revival have been saved for the last day and judging by the massive crowd they attracted last year, you’ll need to get in early. They’re extremly strong live, have a massive number of killer tracks from their debut album, It’s Time and they’ll rock the place. Prepare for cowboys meets rock ‘n’ roll.
`
So that’s it. Like we said, Tickets are going fast – so Act now. Full detials can be found HERE. Enjoy and make sure you check out as many of the other acts as you can, it’s too good a line-up to miss.

Review: Ryan Sheridan Live @ The Róisín Dubh, Galway (May 7th 2011)

Posted in General Tickets There Blog, Gig Review, Music with tags , , , on May 25, 2011 by goodgutterpress

The Róisín Dubh is packed to near capacity as Ryan Sheridan takes to the stage. He’s in high spirits tonight after the release of his debut album The Day You Live Forever. Dressed in peaked black cap and suit jacket, he cuts a slightly stocky figure.

With no time to waste he jumps straight into his brand of high tempo acoustic rock. With what appears to be a basic enough percussion setup (hand cymbals, bongos and a beat box), the Polish born Artur Grazcyk brings an incredible rhythm and power to the performance that compliments Sheridan’s fast strumming style. There is no let up in this regard for the first few numbers; Take it All Back, High Roller and Standing Tall, as the duo let the crowd know what to expect for the next hour or so.

Providing insight, the Monaghan man pauses between songs and states “I started this song in New York” where Sheridan lived for most of his teen years. His vocals have a polished American flavour to them as they carry over the enthusiastic crowd and juxtaposed with his scratchy guitar sound they serve well in drawing the audience in.

The single The Dreamer brings a great reaction. Graczyk’s stomping beat strapped tightly to Sheridan’s choppy guitar now has the crowed dancing.Machine and Endless Road reveals a softer slow tempo sound as he abandons his strumming hand and picks his way through these simple acoustic numbers but is forced to stop abruptly due to sound problems. However this doesn’t seem to phase him as he chooses to share the origins of his songs with the audience.

The show moves on with a pumped up version of Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison Blues, which brings the house down, and Sheridan too, as he intentionally falls flat on his back but manages to still play the guitar with great ease. Perhaps due to his dancing days with Riverdance, Sheridan’s performing persona stands to him as he commands the stage with the album title track ‘The Day You Live Forever’ and also The Game.

By now he’s cocky and gregarious with the crowd in front of him. He finishes with the single; Jigsaw, which only leaves people begging for more. He delivers in the form of The Dreamer as an encore, which is played for a second time tonight.

This was a tight well-worked performance from a talented singer-songwriter. Sheridan certainly delivered the goods throughout the entire performance and there is no doubt that he will do so in the future.

This is what happens when you leave the internet for a while, things go arse ways! Yesterday I logged through the phone for a quick peak at the news and what did I discover? One of my favourite Irish Music Blogs, Harmless Noise, is closing down forever. The blogs owner, chief architect and all-round voice of music, Naomi McArdle, has decided to wind down the blog and apparently her writing career for good.

Beginning on the Hotpress blog ‘Off Her Rocker’, Nay started Harmless Noise in 2009 and within a very short space of time, had etched out a highly regarded position for her-self amongst the Dublin music scene. Over the past two years she has strived to find, promote and love as many of our home-grown talents as possible. She always has a good ear (aside from Bats, I won’t give in Nay!) and always set the standard for getting out and going to see these bands in person.

Nay has put up with some hard times over the past two years but the support she’s received from her readers and the bands she strives to promote shows that blogging is beneficial to the music scene, as there are very few main stream outfits who are bothered giving these bands any coverage. Her blog is a bench mark for all serious bloggers if they want to achieve their goal of properly publicizing our own bands and artists. Her unmeasurable hard work and sacrifice to keep the blog going, in good times and bad, is a testament to her love and devotion for Ireland’s music scene.

Of course it wasn’t boredom or lack of interest or love that’s brought Harmless Noise to a close, it wasn’t even the occasional fruitcake that pops up on all blogs at one time or another. Nay has no shortage of love for what she does and is more than capable of handling the masked nastiness of the internet’s troll community. I won’t go into the reasons as it’s not my business and you’re better reading it for yourself on Harmless Noises’ last ever post located here: This Is The Last One I Will Spin

Harmless Noise will be sorely missed by her friends, her readers but most importantly the bands she worked so hard for. There is now one less credible, hard working source out there to find and write about our music, closing that window of opportunity to younger artists just a little bit more, as if it wasn’t hard enough for them already.

To Nay we say good luck and we hope to see you back soon!

LEMMY: The Movie

Posted in General Tickets There Blog, Music Video with tags , , , , , , on April 7, 2011 by Tickets There

If you haven’t seen it yet then Tickets There can only advise you to pick up a copy NOW! Before you ask, Lemmy Who? Lemmy ‘Fucking’ Kilmister that’s who!.

One of the best music films of all time based on it’s subject alone, Lemmy from Motörhead! Without a doubt the coolest man in Rock ‘N’ Roll and possibly the world. What’s the secret to Lemmy’s coolness? Well unlike the posers, the wannabe’s and the sissy bitches (Kings of Leon, Kings of Leon, Kings of Leon), Lemmy is a man true to himself and does / says / acts the way he wants without exception. The embodiment of rock n roll for 90 minutes in your very own home, the closest a lot of us will come to actually living the life style generations before us have spoken in awe of for so long. Long live Lemmy and long live Motörhead. Enjoy.

Pay To Play – Tyrants, Thieves and The Bands They Rob

If there’s one topic that every music site, blog, magazine and opinionist in the world has to voice their view on at one time or another,  it’s illegal downloading. Ever since the whole Metallica Vs. Napster fall out in 2000, the music world has become strongly divided on the subject of illegal downloading and file sharing. Bands and fans alike have split right down the middle with some artists strongly supporting moderate file sharing while others bitterly oppose illegal downloading of their music, their work and their art. Tickets There strongly supports the latter and since UPC won their case yesterday, we decided it was the perfect time to tell you why.

Anti-Capitalism – Viva La Revolution!

Is anyone else getting sick of people constantly heralding the advantages of illegal downloading? The constant punk rehash drivel we’re subjected to every time an outspoken unemployed college student or post grad jumps to defend illegal downloading and the D.I.Y. environment that’s rising from the ashes of the once mighty music industry? The whole anti-capitalist, anti-system propaganda they drill you with to justify their positions and the slew of examples of tyranny and control the record companies yield and the travesty that befalls good bands. Sorry my friends, you’re not hurting anyone….aside from the bands you claim to love and support that is.

Funnily enough, you rarely hear any of these struggling artists come out and support the outspoken contingent that drives these messages. I’ve yet to hear one of the hundreds of independent Irish bands who are actively looking to make a living from the music industry and their art come out publicly and say yes, ‘we want people to illegally download our music and share it with the world forever’. They may give a free single here and there, offer free streaming of new albums but that doesn’t mean they want you to ignore the physical copy when you see it in Tower, or click next when it pops up on ITunes. They’re offering you these free streaming sources because that’s practically the only thing new bands can do these days to make themselves known and make a name for themselves. It might be easier if they had a record company behind them, you know pushing their name, getting them airplay, managing them properly and what not  but no, the ‘champions of the illegal file sharing’ have made certain that there’s no money to be made from real bands anymore. Round of applause, you’ve done a good job killing hopes for new bands around the world.

While these ‘champions’ make their speeches, write their articles and blogs, fill their IPhones, IPods and MP3 players with terabyte’s of stolen music, all the while feeling smug that they’re fighting the enemy, bands and artists are feeling more pressure than they’ve been subjected to in decades. It’s no secret that many, many bands and artists have/are and always will be given the shaft by the industry that feeds of their work but now, thanks to the lack of revenue from real bands (aside from the handful of lucky ones), record labels are no longer interested in even pretending to sign new acts and why would they be?

Record Companies = Tyrants?

Record labels are in the music business to make money, same reason as every other company out there. If they don’t make money, they can’t compete or give their artists a decent financial or competitive platform. These days, X-Factor, American Idol, Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, Jedward, Take That, Justin Bieber and Cheryl Cole make money for the record companies so who do you think will benefit from that? I doubt anyone could believe that Justin Bieber’s success will land Ham Sandwich a recording contract. More than likely a Justin Bieber replica will reap the benefits.

Unfortunately, the industry isn’t hurting. But Jobs are being lost, less and less bands are getting signed, A&R men have become virtually non-existent, Promotion is becoming more focused on the guaranteed buck earners with little or nothing left for new and upcoming artists yet the machine keeps rolling. Major record labels like Sony BMG, Warner Music Group, EMI and the Universal Music Group continue their acquisition of smaller, independent labels because real bands aren’t selling albums anymore, which is creating an excellent little niche monopoly in the music industry. Without record sales, most independent labels haven’t a hope of surviving long and without these independent labels even fewer ‘real’ bands and artists will get signed in the future. The fewer ‘real’ bands on the scene decreases competition and stops people from being distracted from the main sales pitch and products. Welcome to a world laying the foundation for 24 hour, manufactured, conveyer belt music monopoly with no dangerous originality, no un-controllable elements and a marketing strategy that’s been perfected over decades and is now ready to come into full fruition.

But, But…..

There are arguments of course, the best being the claim that music is now returning it’s original state. Before the 1930’s, bands almost exclusively played live and that’s how they earned their reputation. Live performances were the be all and end all and now, more than any time over the past few decade’s bands are relying on live performances to make an income and afford to stay together. This is a fair point but next time you’re going to see your favorite Irish band and they’re playing to 30/50 people despite having (in your opinion) the greatest song repertoire in the country, ask yourself something, would you keep going? Would you be happy in your 5th year together playing to crowds of 10,20, 100+ max? Receiving rave reviews from the few major sources with readership, working hard to appear on any radio station, magazine, TV show or event that’ll have you and still end up with a better reputation than your bank account and ticket sales would lead you to believe?

It isn’t all about the money, but as a wise musician once told me, “if you’re gonna be in a band you need a lot of free time and a lot of money”. That is what it takes to make a real go of things in the industry but if you aren’t selling albums, aren’t filling venues but you’re still paying for studios, rehearsal spaces, travel costs for tours, management, booking agents, equipment rental, equipment purchases, tour hands, rent, food, bills..etc, etc then the money comes into play and bands need it to survive and compete. They need it to make a name for themselves. Thanks to illegal downloading, even some of the best bands are being left to rot and defend for themselves.

They Don’t Need the Money, they have enough!!

Some like to point out that they’re really only out to hurt money made bands and they still buy music from smaller unknown acts. Very decent of you, but please explain to me why those ‘smaller unknown bands’ aren’t appearing in the charts if that’s where your money is going. Record labels still aren’t signing these small bands because they don’t believe there’s a market for them. Why? Because older bands that sound like them aren’t selling anymore. Illegally downloading music from the likes of U2 and Metallica won’t hurt them financially in the same way it will a smaller act but if you step back a moment and see the big picture, you’ll notice any illegal downloading affects all of these bands, big and small. If bands like Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails and The Smashing Pumpkins want to give away their music for free then great. These guys all have studios, money and can do what ever they like. If a band doesn’t want you to download their music for free then have some respect and don’t do it. There’s no justification because it’s illegal and despite some peoples claims, it isn’t a victimless crime. It’s hurting the bands you love and only making the record company’s control of our beloved music world more dominant and powerful. Dead weight is cut, profits increase.

Couldn’t Care Less – Long Live Downloading!

As for the whole ‘you can’t respect something you didn’t earn’ theory. Well, that might explain why even semi-big independent album releases generate hype for about 2/3 weeks before disappearing off the face of the earth. People can’t focus or devote themselves to albums or bands anymore. It’s trendy to be eclectic and all knowing about everything but you know what, sometimes it’s a lot more enjoyable to find one good album and immerse yourself in it rather than finding 200 poor albums with various hooks and going through them like socks. Quality will always be king in the world, everything else is fleeting and that’s why the quality bands deserve the attention because they’re the ones you’ll re-buy on new formats. They’re the ones you won’t take for granted. They’re the ones you’ll dream of taking your kids to see, just so you can pass on the same joy you feel every time you think of their music and they’re the ones that you’ll bore your friends to tears taking about every chance you get because you just can’t thank them enough for giving you something very special and you want to spread that message as far as you can reach (Def Leppard RULE!!)

Don’t download, don’t file share and don’t rip off bands money. They need it to survive and the more money they make, the more likely it is the recording industry will come back and help these bands out again. There’s a lot more money to be made from bands who can tour and release albums for decades on end than there is from overnight success stories who manage to keep it together for a quick 3/5 year period before the press attention and drug problems send them spiraling out of control, Rock bands can hold their drugs and they know how to moon photographers when the occasion rises. Pay for music like you would anything else and support your local bands, your independent labels, your local Record Stores (who sadly didn’t get a proper mention here – we’ll make it up to them) and the recording industry. Things are only going to get harder and harder for these bands so let’s try to show them we do care and we’re not just in it for the freebies.

STEEL PANTHER – WE LOVE EM!

Posted in General Tickets There Blog, Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on September 26, 2010 by Tickets There

After hearing a lot about them over the last year, Tickets There finally sat down and gave Steel Panther a spin. It didn’t take long, about 1 minute actually before we fell head over heals in love with them.

They’re possibly the best hair metal band to emerge from the states in Christ knows how long. Death to All But Metal, Community Property and Fat Girl (Thar She Blows) are enough to make us pick up their album later on today and their videos give The Foo Fighters competition.

Community Property has to be the greatest ballad ever written with lines like “You’re the only girl that I like to screw, When I’m not on the road” and “I’ll kiss your mouth, Even after you swallow my load” it’s the classic all bands wish they had the balls to write. Even AC/DC show more restraint in their lyrics!

And before you think it, our love isn’t growing just because they reference Def Leppard and Motley Crue in Death To All But Metal and even show pictures of both bands in the video, we love them because it’s about time someone came out with some kick ass metal that calls Hip Hop and Rap stars Eminem, Dr. Dre, Kanye West and 50 Cent the cocks they are.

Happy Arthur’s Day 2010

Posted in General Tickets There Blog, News with tags , , , , , , on September 23, 2010 by Tickets There

It’s that time again folks, today is Arthur’s day, one magical day to celebrate the Irish brewing legend Arthur Guinness and his world famous stout.

Murphy’s fans will have to bite their tongues later as thousands of Guinness lovers will flock to the nearest pub after work to raise a pint in memory of the man, the drink and a trademark that has become synonymous with Ireland over the last 251 years.

Tickets There, being fond lovers of the drink will shake off our now five day hangover to make it to McKenna’s pub in Dun Laoghaire where the proprietor, Arthur McKenna will retire after more than 50 years behind the counter. He is due to officially hand over running of the family pub to his oldest son, Arthur McKenna Junior (Arthur’s day or what!).

The hustle and bustle of today will of course be concentrated around St. James Gate and the various other venues participating in Ireland as Diego, Guinness’ French owners put on a show to rival the St. Patrick’s day parade, hiring help from America, England, Wales and if they’re really stuck, Ireland itself but try not to forget the local pubs if you’re out tonight, the ones who sell you sweet, lovely Guinness everyday and need your business now more than ever.

At 17:59 this evening, we’ll be raising our glasses to Arthur McKenna Senior, Arthur McKenna Jr. and off course, Arthur Guinness.

Axl Rose – Asshole or Hero? NME Ask The Question!

Posted in General Tickets There Blog, Music, News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 29, 2010 by Tickets There

**Before Reading This Article – Be Fair and Head over to NME and Read the original post by clicking this sentence**

Tim Chester over at the English music scenes answer to a cheap gossip rag, New Musical Express has posted a question based piece entitled, ‘Axl Rose – Asshole or Hero?’. Now normally the NME isn’t worth reading, replying to or taking any notice of at all, well not unless you want to know which shop Pete Doherty just walked out of or what brand of cigarettes Amy Winehouse smokes (Thanks Daily Gossip!). But this time Tickets There is taking the liberty of branding the author, the magazine and their staff a bunch of over the hill, raised on camp indie bullshit-artists, with as much right to write about Rock N’ Roll as a Nazi has to a fair hearing.

The Facts: Reading 2010

Guns N’ Roses played Reading on Friday night. In the week leading up to the event, NME spearheaded reporting a speech from Reading /Leeds organizer Melvin Been that the Guns had been issued a warning that their stage times must be adhered to after local councils and police made a similar warning to Melvin a co.

The band were scheduled to arrive on stage at 09:30pm, eventually arriving at 10:30 -an hour late. Their original cut off time was 11:30pm and they managed to play on until 12:00. When the band tried to return for an encore, their sound was cut so the band staged a sit in protest after leading the crowd through an ‘acoustic’ rendition of Paradise City, which saw nearly 90,000 fans singing along and chanting ‘Let Them Play‘ and ‘Fuck You Reading‘(Not a secret, watch the videos). They eventually left the stage after Axl made a comment the band would not play Leeds after the treatment they received at Reading by ‘those responsible’

Coming on Late Ain’t right is it?

For the past twenty years, Guns N’ Roses have had a very obvious, very public, well documented and very much lampooned and hated reputation for showing up late by heritage fans and the music press. In fact, the writer shows a knowledge for this by highlighting (as usual) the low points and incidents of previous GN’R tours, in no great detail or context off course as that might involve some real journalism on their behalf – God forbid. For anyone to act surprised or angry at the group for turning up late has a vendetta because Axl Rose and the band have never done anything to make you think they’ve changed.

Do these people still act surprised when they get wet in the shower? Because they seem to have no comprehension for the flippin’ obvious.

Our Response – Axl Rose – Asshole or Hero?

Rock music has lost it’s way – Rock is now dead. Rock N Roll hall of fame, award shows – heritage bands reuniting, greatest hits set-lists, staying together for the ‘career’, money, album after album of repeated glory day styles, follow the rules, adapt to the industry’s expectations, the fans expectations, pander to the press, bad mouth your band mates and still stick together because there’s no-where else to go. Bands are old, rock is old and it’s fans, it’s bands and the industry built around them to exploit and drain what ever profits it can has finally destroyed what was once a perfect machine for encouraging rebellion. A style designed to give kids a voice to express their views, their difference of opinion and the things the mean the most to them.

Rock N’ Roll, Punk, Rap, Heavy Metal all evolved in each generation to suit new fans, new young people and their lives but the spirit of rock n roll has always been carried over and that message is simple – Don’t Follow The Rules and fuck society, fuck the industry, the government and fuck you, I’ll do what I want.

That message has become a cliché, a punch line for the marketing and advertising industry every time a twenty two year old college grad is given the new Motorhead album to push. The people running things, the bands involved and the new breed of fans, raised on ageing fogies playing greatest hits tours every year while struggling younger bands repeatedly get passed up so rich musicians can make more money. These days bands have to sound like Coldplay or Arcade Fire to get ahead, music that your gran, neighbours and teachers can sit back with, sip wine to and discuss the banking crisis. Very rock n’ roll eh.

Then you take Guns N’ Roses. Old Guns N’ Roses. Slash, Duff, Axl, Izzy and Steven and Appetite for Destruction. Sweet Child O Mine, Welcome to The Jungle and Paradise City. massive. Then Later with Don’t Cry, November Rain, Live and Let Die, You Could be Mine…just as massive. They had it all and could still be out there today, like every single other heritage rock band making money, touring Appetite for Destruction and a choice selection from what ever Appetite rip off they released that year and pandering to the fans every whim and wish. The so called ‘Most Dangerous Band‘ could be there in the O2, top hat, American flag shorts and all, like nothing ever changed in the past twenty years.

Wake the fuck up, things change and people move on.

Slash is gone, playing American anthems to stadiums, selling guitars for Gibson, living up in every respect to the stereotype cast on him. Discussing reunions and his love for Axl. Duff is around, playing in second rate punk bands, writing for Playboy (he’s a journalist now don’t ya know) and still playing with Slash and Matt Sorum in Guns N’….sorry, I mean Velvet Revolver. He likes to discuss reunions occasionally aswell. Steven, poor Steven plays in Adler’s Appetite, a band that until recently exclusively played Appetite For Destruction at every show. Again, he mentions the idea of a re-union at every given opportunity.

Axl does not discuss reunions, he does not give interviews, he does not play national anthems to baseball stadiums full of 40/50 year old Americans who point and remember he was the guy who sang Sweet Child O’ Mine. He keeps the band fresh. He works on his music in his own time, he tours and plays shows ranging from 2.5-3.5 hours with a new band of incredibly tight musicians playing half hits and half new material. He goes on stage when he’s ready, he releases his music when he’s ready and he does what he likes, when he wants to do it. Not when people tell him he should do it.

He makes no secret of this and anyone that tries to argue that is an opinionated, but faceless moron following the sheep and the lead taken by people set out against Axl for personal grudges. Ya see, musicians who don’t pander to the press become enemies. People who won’t do what they’re told become a nuisance. and people who tell you to fuck off after you’ve devoted yourself to them for years on end get pissed off.

Axl Rose does what he likes when he likes. He doesn’t set out to piss off fans or anyone else but anyone turning up at a Guns show expecting to see the band on time is a straight up retard and fuck knows where they’d get the idea that was going to happen. It might, it’s not like they never turn up on time but you only hear of the occasions when they don’t. It’s not like every other band in the world always turn up on time, but then again – they don’t make as interesting reading as Axl.

He doesn’t pander to press, to fans, to x-band mates, to record companies or to anyone who else who tells him what he should be dong. He’s nearly 50 years old and he knows very well what he’s doing and how he wants it done. he knows when he’s ready to walk on stage to give the best performance he can and he knows when his musics ready. The Press, managers, fans and no-one else knows this because they all suck off the ‘product’ he’s giving the world. if you don’t like it – fuck off, if you question it – fuck off and if you have a problems guess what – Fuck Off!

Rock N’ Roll is rebellion and Axl Rose rebels against pretty much every rule in the book, whether it’s the industry making them, Society making them, the fans making them or his band making them. He will give you a fantastic show as long as you don’t throw shit at him (by the way, how many of you would remain in your chairs at work if customers came along throwing bottles and coins at you with a spot light in your face blocking your view?? Ya, fuck off!).

Axl Rose is the last true hero of rock n roll because he’s the only one famous enough still telling pressure and rules to go fuck themselves and anyone that can’t see that has no business being a fan of rock in the first place. Fuck off and listen to Radiohead and leave Rock N Roll alone for people with some balls.

Moving On:

Guns N’ Roses play Belfast on Tuesday, Dublin on Wednesday. Don’t go if you want Slash, don’t go if you have somewhere to be after. Go if you want to see the last true icon of a rotting genre, that once gave people alot of hope before it’s originators, it’s fans and it’s spokespeople were absorbed back into the system the movement set out to defy in the first place. He might also play a few cracking tunes while you’re there.

NME – Stick to reviewing The Kings of Leon, The Libertines and The Klaxons. That seems to be as much danger as ye can handle. I hear there’s a fat, squirrel eating lesbian naked somewhere – go quick, there’s a cover due!

Temple House Music Festival Preview!

Posted in General Tickets There Blog, Music, News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on August 28, 2010 by Tickets There

The Temple House Music Festival is just two weeks away and Tickets There is finding it hard to keep the excitement down. Three days of music, drinking, music, drinking, drinking, drinking, music and camping sounds like a lovely way to end a summer that’s already been pretty fantastic.

So now that the date is getting closer, we decided to do the very first ever Tickets There preview of a music festival. The day by day has been released by the organizers so now it’s time for TT to share the bands we’ll be viewing over the course of the three days. Please note copious alcohol consumption is not a band, this is an activity.

DAY 01: Friday September 10th

This is the day we’re really thrilled about. This is when almost all the names that prompted us to buy the tickets in the first place come together, make some noise and provide ‘the perfect opening line’ to a very promising weekend.

Tennents Main Stage

The Undertones: Obviously we’re going to see The Undertones. These boys are headlining the whole thing pretty much so there’s no missing them. Feargal Sharkey may be loooong gone but there a must for any proud Irish music fan. Catch them on the Tennents Stage.

The Stunning: Our Irish music heroes. The Stunning are easily the highlight of this whole weekend. Since splitting in the early nineties, they’ve reformed a handful of times and every performance always prompts the question, ‘why did these guys ever pack it in?’ Led by the amazing Steve Wall, this is guaranteed to be the real headline event of the whole weekend.

The Walls:Ok, so why did The Stunning ever pack it in? Because Joe and Steve Wall needed to create The Walls and in all fairness, that’s a damn fine reason. The Walls will caress you, make you feel calm and happy and then smack you around with a good dose of Drowning Pool. Not happy with that? Well wait till you hear their newest singles Carrying The Fire and Phantom Power and then you’ll be sold. The lads are coming with their two man show, a must viewing for all lovers of music, trust us.

Lucozade Stage

Peter Hook (DJ Set): Does this need a reason to go and see? It’s Peter Frickin’ Hooky for gods sake. The legend of New Order & Joy Divisoon. Always considered the most out spoken member of both bands and never a man to avoid necessary controversy. Unfortuantly it’ just a DJ set but his precene will cement this festival! He’s a must for all fans of everything post-punk, even if you just pop by to say hello on your way to The Stunning and The Undertones.

DAY 02: Saturday September 11th

Will disaster loom with this auspicious day? Did we mean auspicious, I think not. But here’s a chance for it to bring some luck back and with the bands in store for festival goers, this will be the perfect hard rocking / pop rock-tastic day to nurse hangovers and give birth to ‘the beyond’. What exactly happens to tent habitants with hangovers on day two of a festival?

Tennents Main Stage

The Riptide Movement: This is a band Tickets There is watching with great interest. We’ve done their MySpace Review and carried on with a single review over on Drop-D.ie. Now it’s time for the full guns blazing gig experience. Their newest single Hot Tramp is a perfect little slice of rock heaven and you can expect to see us front and center singling along with Hard To Explain.

Donal Dineen: Because you can’t not go and see Donal Dineen.

Lucozade Stage

The Aftermath: Our vote for the real Saturday head-liners. Anyone out there whose a fan of The Stunning will do very well to get their arses over to the Lucozade stage on Saturday and hear some perfect pop-sing along-rock from one of Ireland’s most perfect bands. Their début album, Friendlier Up Here hasn’t got a bad moment on it and judging by their newest single, Lost Procession, their second album will be a perfect follow-up. Six Days to Saturday? Not a chance, day has arrived!

RSAG: Would you believe, we’ve never seen R.S.A.G. live but all that’s about to change. Known for his incredible live performances, this is definitely one to check out for curious folks looking for the future of live performing (unless KISS have their way). Also heck the Walls two man show, both will be fantastic.

Four acts on the Saturday? Well, there’s a lot going on but with hangovers, ‘activities‘ and general wandering about, we’ll try and catch a few more but no promises.

DAY 03: Sunday September 12th

This will be a day mostly based around being destroyed with drink, being tired and not wanting to move from the stuffy, tiny tent. Never the less, we’ll do our best to catch the following groups shake their groove things.

Tennents Main Stage

The Saw Doctors: We’ve seen The Saw Doctors before and they’re well worth viewing. Great fun, classic Irish anthems you’d never buy in a million years but live all those fond eighties/nineties memories will come flooding back and a smile may even break those staunch, indie-cooler than cool faces. Don’t worry, Dublin won’t find out.

Damien Dempsey: Spent so many years slagging the man, we feel we owe him a chance. If nothing else, we’ll enjoy singing along in the hardest Dublin accent you’ll find this side of Finglas.

The Wailer’s: A must! What can you say?

Lucozade Stage

TKO: One of the best younger live bands you’ll catch on the Irish circuit these days. With inspirations like Bruce Springsteen, you’ll be hard pushed to find these guys playing a bad show.

And that’s pretty much it from us and you know what, it’s enough. There’s only so much diversity we can handle in a short space of time and we always think sitting back and appreciating few is always more enjoyable than rushing through many. Some people like to mention the 8,000 bands they fell in love with an hour ago but we’re a lot happier finding one excellent act instead. Fortunately, we have a good 20 to enjoy.

Two weeks folks, tickets are selling fast but you can still get them from Tickets.ie. This will be a great festival!

Guns N’ Roses – Dublin, O2: One Month And Counting & Support Announced

Posted in General Tickets There Blog, Music, News with tags , , , , , , , , on July 31, 2010 by Tickets There

This time next month folks, the mighty Axl Rose will be bringing the ferocious, legendary Guns N’ Roses to Irish shows for two massive shows in Belfast’s Odyssey Arena August 31st and Dublin’s Point Depot (or the O2 is you will) on Sept. 1st for two nights of blistering hard rock, ginormous ballads and displays of fine musical craftsmanship from each member of the band. It’s also been announced that Canadian rockers (hate that work in that context) Danko Jones will be providing support for both shows. No Sebastian Back unfortunately but these guys will rock the place.

Now, there’s alot of bickering about Axl and the new guys (incidentally, some of the members have been with the band since the early/late nineties…so they’re not that new) and it’s time everyone moved on. The majority of music press outlets have a vendetta against Axl because unlike Slash and Duff, Axl chooses not to talk to them and become their play thing. Also, many ‘old GN’R heads’ hate Chinese Democracy simply because Slash isn’t there and it’s not a carbon reproduction of Appetite for Destruction. Many forget that the old diehards complained just as much when the Use Your Illusions came out, but that’s neither here nor there.

Don’t be fooled folks, this right here is two incredible opportunities to see one of rock n’ rolls true heroes live in the flesh. Not only is he a legend, but he’s a legend at the top of his game as Chinese Democracy is one the greatest albums released in the last ten years, you just have to forget the old sound and appreciate it for what it is. When any other band tries a new direction these days they’re praised far and wide for being different but when a rock band does it, all hell breaks loose. Does Axl care? Not one fucking bit, the man does what ever the hell he likes and that’s why we love him. Finally there’s a rock n roll front-man in the 21st century who’s not afraid of criticism and attacks from former band members, fans, record companies, the industry or the press. He does what he likes, when he likes and if you don’t like it – Fuck Off!
