Posted in Gig Listing, Music, News with tags , , , , , , on May 30, 2011 by Tickets There

Metal fans of Dublin (and Ireland for those who can travel), your independent record store needs you. Into the Void Records (3 Whitefriar Place, Dublin) are holding a fund-raiser on July 16th @ The Pint to, well presumably, help beat the auld recession effects away from their door.

SICKENER and COLDWARare the only band announced so far. More TBC: July 16th, The Pint, Dublin! FREE ADMISSION!!

Into the Void opened earlier this year after well known Sentintal Records in Temple Bar closed its doors last June. The shop is run by a number of independent labels including Sentintal themselves and remains one of Dublin’s only heavy metal / punk dedicated stories. They sell CD’s, Vinyl, patches and there’s even a tattoo studio out back. Hop, skip from Stephen’s Green. Staff are sound and there’s always a nice contingent of the Dublin metal brigade about the place.

Interview with Liz Is Evil’s Jay Bagnall

Posted in General Tickets There Blog, Interview, Music with tags , , on May 28, 2011 by ticketssteve

Jay Bagnall is fast becoming one of the most respected drummers in Ireland.  Best known for his part in Punk rockers Liz Is Evil, and for reclaiming the drum solo. Liz Is Evil’s debut album ‘Failed Philosophy’ appeared in Dan Hegarty’s list of Top Irish Albums of 2010. While more recently they have opened for  The Beat.  We caught up with him to talk about all things Evil, and all things drum.

TT: What attracted you to the drums in the first place?

JB: “When I was younger, I was just attracted to the idea of hitting things, didn’t matter what it was. Chairs, tables, trees….I just hit them. When I saw a drum kit for the first time, I was just astounded at how big they were, I didn’t even know what each drum was called……I was just allowed to hit them. From then on, I knew I wanted to play drums.”

TT: How old where you when you first picked up the sticks?

JB: “I was probably 6, or 7 when I got my first drum kit for Christmas. I remember before I had my first kit, being allowed into a friends’ house to play drums after school every so often. It was great, I couldn’t even reach the kick pedal at the time! I’m glad I got to start young, it helped immensely.”

TT: Did it come naturally to you?

JB: “I remember being able to play the intro to “Paradise City” fairly good when I picked up sticks for the first time. As I said, I used to hit and tap things all the time, so rhythm came naturally to me. I used to dance alot when I was a kid too, so that probably helped my overall sense of timing, and rhythm in general. My Mam and Dad got me a bigger kit two weeks after they got me my first one, so I must have been doing something right!”

TT: Who were your original influences?

JB: “When I was younger, my Mam and Dad used to play all sorts of music in the house. From pop, to rock, to punk, to dance music. So musically, I had a mixed bag of influences to start off with. The first drummer I remember being truly inspired by was Animal from The Muppets. I remember watching an episode, and just being awestruck that a puppet could play drums! Seriously though, the first drummer that inspired me would probably have been Steven Adler from G’n’R. I loved the sound of the drums on Appetite, even as a kid who hadn’t a clue about sound, or drumming in general. I remember just drumming along to anything I could when I was younger. I used to do a lot of air drumming too, which helped. Later influences when I got a little older would have been John Otto, Chad Smith, Dave Silveria and most of the rock and metal drummers of the 90’s. Now that I’m a little older, I listen to all sorts of music, so drummers like Buddy Rich, Steve Smith, Tony Williams, and Neil Peart have really opened my eyes to a lot of things.”

TT: What was the first album/song you bought was it purely for the drumming?

JB: “I remember buying Limp Bizkit’s Chocolate Starfish album when I started getting pocket money….I was blown away by their drummer John Otto and what he could do. That was the first album I’d bought, and owned, when I was around 13 or 14. I didn’t really need to buy a lot of music when I was younger, my folks had tonnes of music in the house for me to listen to. I’d just go through what they had, pop it on, and drum all day.”

TT: What was the first gig you attended?

JB: “My Mam used to sing in a band when she was younger. I used to get to go to her gigs, which was great, because I was allowed to mess around on the drums when they weren’t playing. But the first gig I attended, on my own, was Ozzfest back in ’02. It was such an amazing experience, to see all of my favourite bands and drummers in one huge, big festival. That gig showed me how loud, and proud you could play drums.”

TT: What was the name of your first band and were you any good?

JB: “Wow….The first band I formed was a band called Alloy’d when I was around 12. It was a metal band. It was me, and my friend Chris on guitar. We thought we were amazing, I remember having decent chops back then, but not enough to play really heavy metal, which is what I was beginning to get into at that age. We eventually let my brother Lee in to play. We got progressively better once we started jamming more frequently. I still play in that band to this day. We’ve come a long way since rehearsing in my bedroom all those years ago.”

TT: When and where did you play your first gig?

JB: “I was asked by a friend of mine’s older brother to join a band with him. They used to do cover songs, and a few originals. My first gig with them was when I was maybe…..13 or 14, in Eamonn Dorans. That was around 11 years ago now. I started gigging when I was younger, I was lucky to be asked to join bands that had musicians that were older than me. I remember doing a drum solo at one of my Mams gigs’ when I was really young too. Can’t remember how old I was though.”

TT: Was there a eureka moment when you said this is what I want to do for a living?

JB: “When I used to rehearse in my bedroom as a kid, I used to play as loud as I could so everyone on the road could hear me. I used to hope that someone would hear me and think I was good enough to join a band, so there was never really a eureka moment. The desire has always been there, ever since I had my first kit. I wanted to be a drummer, making a living from it or not, I knew I just wanted to do it.”

TT: How many bands have you been in before and how many are you currently in?

JB: “I honestly can’t put a number on how many bands I’ve been in. I’ve been very lucky in that so many people have asked me to play in bands with them. I’ve always been juggling bands since I started gigging, I prefer it that way. If you’re not busy, you’re bored, as far as I’m concerned. Currently, I’m playing in 5 bands, Liz Is Evil, IAmACarCrash, Alloy’d, The Nom Nom Noms, and one unnamed covers band. Some rehearse and gig more than others, so it’s not too bad juggling between them. I enjoy drumming, so any chance I get to play, I’m all over it.”

TT: Are you a drum whore then?

JB: “That’s something I’ve been called many, many times, among other things……”

TT: What did you learn from each of the experiences?

JB: “In each band I’ve been in, I’ve taken something from it. Whether it’s how to play odd time signatures, how to hit harder (or softer….), or even the business side of the music industry, I’ve taken something away from each and every gig, rehearsal, and experience with a band. I’m like a sponge, I just soak up as much information as I possibly can when I’m drumming, or watching another drummer, or musician, play.”

TT: Do you drum in your sleep or have drumming dreams?

JB: “People always tell me to stop drumming, or tapping when I’m not behind a kit….it’s infectious. It’s a serious problem that I have, I can’t help it. I have had some weird drumming dreams, and woken up saying ‘Damn……I need help!’. Drumming is such a huge part of my life, that I’d be a little worried if I didn’t have dreams about it now and then.”

TT: What is your favourite drum beat and why?

JB: “I absolutely love the simplicity of Come Together by The Beatles, but then again love the ferociousness and complexity of Danny Carey’s drum solo in Forty Six and Two, by Tool. My favourite though, would have to be John Otto’s drumming on Re-Arranged by Limp Bizkit. His feel, and pocket on that song are unparallelled in my opinion. He throws ghost notes all over the place, displaces the beat here and there. To this day I’m still awestruck by it. There are plenty of other beats that I love, but I would honestly be all day talking about them.”

TT: Who is your favourite drummer and why?

JB: “John Otto, without a doubt. He’s been a huge inspiration on me. I love other drummers like Gavin Harrison, Joey Jordison, Stewart Copeland……I listen to any drummer who can play well, and knows what they’re doing, even if I don’t particularly like the song.”

TT: Do you play and other instruments?

JB: “I’m learning how to play guitar, and bass at the moment. I can play a tiny bit of keyboard too. I have a good understanding of chords, and scales, I just haven’t been able to put them into practice yet. I do a little singing too.”

TT: Are you a frustrated songwriter?

JB: “Absolutely. I have so many ideas in my head, but can’t quite communicate them just yet. Someday, I’ll be able to write, and perform my own song.”

TT: Will we ever see you do a Dave Grohl and front a band or solo project?

JB: “That is something I’d be very interested in doing. I love Dave Grohl, and his approach to music, and drumming. He’s fantastic. One of my biggest inspirations, also.”

TT: Why is drumming dismissed by the mass media when it is one of most important components in popular music?

JB: “I think drummers get a bad wrap because in some regards we’re still considered ‘just the drummer’. I’m very lucky, in that I rarely get treated that way. If you think about it, songs like Sunday, Bloody Sunday, or Give It Away Now wouldn’t be the songs they are without those memorable drum intro’s. I think the drums in a song are just as important as the melody. You dance, and tap along to a song just as much as you would hum, or sing it. I hate the idea that good drumming doesn’t get as much respect as a really catchy hook. I love catchy lyrics, and great melodies, but when people tell me that the drums in a song aren’t nearly as important as everything else, it gets on my nerves. Drummers don’t get treated as bad now though, I guess. There’s plenty of drummers out there fronting bands now, I love knowing that the front man of a band is a drummer, or that the drummer is the focus of a band. That being said, I don’t think drumming is the only part of music I love, I just don’t like when people disregard it as something that can be done by a machine, or that anyone can play drums.”

TT: Have you done much session work and are you available for session work?

JB: “I’ve done a few sessions here and there, and I most certainly am available for work. I get called on to do live gigs, or reherse with bands, and help with arrangements of songs. I’d love to do more recording work though.”

TT: Who would you like to work with then?

JB: “Anyone who’ll have me. That’s the honest to God’s truth.”

TT: What advice would you give any budding drummers?

JB: “Stay fit is one priority I can’t stress enough, especially if you’re a rock drummer. If you don’t have the stamina to play then you’re leaving yourself short, because you can’t devote your full energy into the music. Practice, practice, practice! The great thing about drumming is that you can literally practice anywhere, anytime. Don’t listen when people tell you to stop tapping. Build your drumming repertoire by listening to as much music as you can, and bring it into your style. Just be yourself when you play, don’t try and play like anyone else, because you aren’t them, you’re you. Don’t get frustrated if you can’t play a particular song, or beat, always know that you will eventually be able to do it, it just takes time. I could go on all day talking about this, but one thing that I’d say to anyone who wants to play drums – LISTEN to the musicians around you, and don’t let your ego get in the way of the music. Oh, and look after your ears, believe me……”

TT: Whats happening next with Liz is Evil?

JB: “At the moment, we’re promoting our album ‘Failed Philosophy’ which is available in stores, and on iTunes now. We have a few gigs lined up for March, and April. Check out our Facebook page for dates, and venues. Hope to see you there!”

Jape – Hands of Fire / Lying on a Deathbed (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , , , on May 27, 2011 by Tickets There

What ever your taste in music, there’s little to no chance you haven’t come across and enjoyed the mighty Jape over the past few years. Ever since the release of their second album, The Monkeys in the Zoo have More Fun Than Me in 2004, Jape’s appeal and presence on the Irish scene has been growing at a rapid rate. In 2009 the band won the Choice Music Prize for their third album, Ritual and now they’re back to do it all over again. Titled Ocean of Frequency, the group’s fourth album is due to come out in September but you don’t have to wait for new music as the band has just released the album’s first double A-side single.

Hands of Fire is a welcoming boost of energy from the band that does it better than anyone else. No first single from Richie Egan is going to have anything less than an upbeat, catchy as sin chorus, a perfect, striking bass line and an appealing ‘we should go raving’ quality. Lying on a Deathbed comes from the opposite end of the Jape spectrum. Gentle, busy but dreamlike and placid. Fine home grown lyrics with the occasional eye raising naughty thrown in from time to time. Overall, a perfect complement to Hands of Fire.

No denying it now, the return of Jape has begun. Prepare for show announcements and get ready for an album that’s promising to be one of the best we’ll hear this year. Listen to Hands of Fire / Lying on a Deathbed now @ Jape’s Official Soundcloud

Review: Suede – Live @ The Olympia, Dublin (May 24th, 2011)

Posted in Gig Review, Music with tags , , , , , on May 26, 2011 by ticketssteve

Suede kicked of their 3 night residency of reunion gigs in Dublin’s Olympia Theatre by performing their genre defining, seminal, 1993 self-titled debut album Suede in its entirety. Eighteen years later, the songs are still fresh and authentic.  Although this is not the original line-up (with original guitarist turned super-producer Bernard Butler having refused the invitation to play. He instead opted to re-master tonight’s material and follow up album Dog Man Star) their was a certain amount of romance, in the air as the band took to the stage

Dublin quartet Sweet Jane had the unenviable job of support act, on such an emotional occasion for Suede fans. But they steadily won the crowd over, with their dark ephemeral, wall of sound. Lydia Des Dolles voice is a cross between Hope Sandoval and Bilinda Butcher while guitarist Danda Paxton’s voice adds a dark colour to the mist of grime   Their musical influences include The Jesus and Marychain, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Iggy Pop and The Ramones.

The crowd sing lustfully along to a Sex Pistols track, as the lights dim and Suede swagger onto the stage, dressed head-to-toe in black. Led by drummer Simon Gilbert who appears to have been in cryostasis, all these years. In fact most of the band seem to have preserved themselves remarkably well.  Brett Anderson strides onto the stage last, to thunderous applause.  The years have been, especially kind to Anderson, who is just as thin as he was in 1993.

From the first note of “So Young” its obvious that this is no mere, money collecting exercise, by a band riding this years nostalgia wave. Suede, clearly have a point to prove, and prove it they do. Anderson’s voice is impeccable through the entire show, as he prances and pogo’s nonstop. Fan favourite “Animal Nitrate” is the first of many songs to benefit from the addition of Neil Codling on guitar. Though the highlight for many seemed to be, being given “the finger” by Anderson.

However, the man with the most to prove is Richard Oakes, having replaced the architect of Suede’s sound, Bernard Butler. Oakes has often been the fan’s whipping boy for Butler’s departure, rather than the rest of the band. By the time the band play the rousing “Moving” Oakes, has dispelled these misgivings totally, with precise renditions of the guitar parts. He is clearly enjoying himself, especially on songs like “Sleeping Pills and “Metal Mickey”.

Anderson’s voice goes Bowie on the outro of “Pantomime Horse” as he goes down on his knees and repeats “have you ever tried in that way…”  Anderson bounds the stage, like a man possessed, on “The Drowners” going into the crowd at one point. The fan’s are also treated to Anderson’s signature claps, on this track.

“Metal Mickey” and “Animal Lover” whip the crowd into a frenzy, before the band depart, leaving Anderson and Codling to deliver the albums closing track “The Next Life” This sparse piano balled perfectly suits the intimate surroundings of the Olympia.

After a short break, Suede return to play some fan-favourite B-sides “My Insatiable One” and “For The Birds” Disappointingly, the band opt to ignore calls to play “Killing of a Flash Boy” Opting instead to give fan’s a taster of whats to come, in their “Coming Op” gig. Firstly with “Thrash” The crowd go manic as Anderson, once again throws himself into the crowd. They finish the night with “Beautiful One’s” where Anderson encourages the crowd to “Sing it!” repeatedly. Once again Anderson bounds into the pit for the final bars, before the band disappear into the night. Just like the characters from their songs.

Feel the excitement building? Anyone who was there last year is and with just over two weeks left until launch, Temple House Festival fever has well and truly begun.

Over one hundred incredible bands, 4 stages, countless events and quirks, a medieval village, an arts trail, excellent food and a thousand other attractions, all set over a glorious June bank holiday weekend. Top that with amazing grounds, no major queuing and excellent organization, you’d be mad to miss it. Also it’s set in Co. Sligo so you can’t go too wrong.

Tickets are selling like hot cakes and Tickets There decided it was time to give you a quick preview of just some of the great bands booked for this years event.

Friday: June 10th

ASH (Bavaria Main Stage)

What can anyone say about the incredible Downpatrick pop rock trio that hasn’t already been said a thousand times before? Ash have been one of the highest ranking staples of the Irish and indeed, international music scene for the better part of two decades. From the release of their massively acclaimed album, 1977 in… 1996 to their trail blazing A-Z series, Ash have lead the way for Irish alternative rock and have remained one of the most influential bands ever to emerge out of Northern Ireland.

The Walls (Bavaria Main Stage)

Since the demise of The Stunning in the nineties, Steve and Joe Wall have been using their time very wisely. Under The Walls banner, they’ve released two records, Hi-LO and New Dawn Breaking and for the past two years, the band have been sporadically playing live while recording their third album, Stop The Lights, which is due out later this year. Armed with an adventurous new live show, a set-list packed with enchanting new material and old favourites, The Walls are well and truly on their way to chart storming and a slot in every homes CD rack. Not one you’ll want to miss on Friday.

Fighting With Wire (Bavaria Main Stage)

One of our MySpace finds and an excellent live act. Taking the stage just before the mighty Ash, Fighting With Wire are an exciting new Irish band that are promised to deliver an excellent set. Their style will also fit in nicely with their headliners so Ash fans, don’t miss them.

Ryan Sheridan (Acoustic Stage– Walled Garden ).

One of the best up and coming songwriters in Ireland at the moment. Ryan’s performances have been landing him a lot of attention recently and soon his name will be everywhere. Temple House have Ryan on a lovely, secluded acoustic stage in a lovely garden away from the packed main stage arena so take this opportunity to check him out before he returns as a headliner next year.

ALSO

We’re going easy on ye for now, what with all the camping gear you’ll be lugging, tent pitching and so on that’ll fill up your morning but don’t dare finish up the Friday without checking out The Flaws, Kanyu Tree and Preachers Son (EDIT: Preachers Son have been moved from Friday to Saturday and will now be playing the main stage at 5:00pm)

Saturday: June 11th

Kerbdog (Bavaria Main Stage)

Saturday sees one of the most exciting events of the whole festival, the reunion of the legendary Kerbdog! That’s right, Cormac Battle and the lads will be taking the stage and belting out some of the biggest alt-rock hits any Irish band has ever produced. Sine the bands 1998 split they’ve reformed a few times. Make sure you catch this gig or you may not get another chance. (Also…they’re bloody savage).

The Fallen Drakes (The Music Maker Stage)

One of the biggest success stories from the Irish music scene and one that keeps on going. The Fallen Drakes have only been together for little over a year but already they’ve landed gigs at the O2 Arena and R.D.S. Outdoor Arena (supporting The Commitments and Bon Jovi respectively). When bands like this are on the up and up, you know it’s going to be a show to remember.

Land Lovers (Bavaria Main Stage)

They’ll be on good an early so don’t spend the whole night partying with Ash. The excellent Land Lovers came to our attention many months back and managed to sneak their way into Tickets There’s own personal daily rotation. Wait for the live version of Immovable Feet and you’ll be glad you took the time to see them.

The Danger Is (The Music Maker Stage)

Tickets There were fortunate enough to discover this amazing, talented, all round lovely lady last year and ever since then we’ve have been quite vocal about our love for her music. With a few choices on the market, an EP and a handful of singles, Niamh and her band, The Danger Is will arrive at Temple house and blow you out of the tent. Possibly our strongest recommendation of the weekend.

Mike Joyce (DJ Set) (The Music Maker Stage)

Former Smiths drummer, Mike Joyce is popping into Temple House be this years Peter Hook, He’ll be playing a DJ set at The Music Maker stage on Saturday night so if you’re not a fan of Whipping Boy or the Stero MC’s, you’ll know where to go. Last year Temple House had the legendary Peter Hook doing roughly the same thing and you couldn’t have asked for a better end to the second day. This year Mike will will be ensuring the party doesn’t manage to slip away.

Sunday: June 12th

Aslan (Bavaria Main Stage)

When running the search on Tickets There for ‘Aslan’ results, I was disappointed that this site has never devoted an article to the dublin legends. By far one of the most successful home grown bands we’ve ever produced and standard setters in the live arena. Led by the infamous Christy Dignam, Aslan have been rocking Irish stages since the early eighties and three decades later little has changed. Hits like ‘Lucy Jones Part 2’, ‘Crazy World’, ‘This Is’ and ‘Rainman’ have endeared them to hearts of thousand of Irish people ensuring packed houses where ever they play. Whether you’ve ever been a fan or not, Aslan are more than worth checking in on – no matter what else is on.

Sweet Jane (Bavaria Main Stage)

After releasing one of the most successful independent Irish albums of 2010, Sweet Jane have turned into an unstoppable touring machine. Their songs are fused with energy last seen on the seventies and their appeal is spreading wider. Mainland Europe, the U.K. and America have brought them an impressively large international fan base which continues to grow. They’re taking the main stage on the final night and are sure to deliver one of the festivals best sets.

The Riptide Movement (The Music Maker Stage)

The Riptide Movement have been firm favorites on Tickets There for a long time. Their second album is set to emerge later this year but already they’ve released two crackin’ singles from it and have taken Ireland by storm. Their repeated appearances on Grafton street, not to mention their constant touring has brought them firmly into the public eye and things are only getting better. Last week it was confirmed they would be one of two Irish bands supporting Bon Jovi when they hit the RDS next month. They rocked Temple House last year and you can damn well bet they’ll do it again in two weeks.

Oddsocks Revival (The Music Maker Stage)

One of Sligo’s own bands, Oddsocks Revival have been saved for the last day and judging by the massive crowd they attracted last year, you’ll need to get in early. They’re extremly strong live, have a massive number of killer tracks from their debut album, It’s Time and they’ll rock the place. Prepare for cowboys meets rock ‘n’ roll.
`
So that’s it. Like we said, Tickets are going fast – so Act now. Full detials can be found HERE. Enjoy and make sure you check out as many of the other acts as you can, it’s too good a line-up to miss.

Review: Ryan Sheridan Live @ The Róisín Dubh, Galway (May 7th 2011)

Posted in General Tickets There Blog, Gig Review, Music with tags , , , on May 25, 2011 by goodgutterpress

The Róisín Dubh is packed to near capacity as Ryan Sheridan takes to the stage. He’s in high spirits tonight after the release of his debut album The Day You Live Forever. Dressed in peaked black cap and suit jacket, he cuts a slightly stocky figure.

With no time to waste he jumps straight into his brand of high tempo acoustic rock. With what appears to be a basic enough percussion setup (hand cymbals, bongos and a beat box), the Polish born Artur Grazcyk brings an incredible rhythm and power to the performance that compliments Sheridan’s fast strumming style. There is no let up in this regard for the first few numbers; Take it All Back, High Roller and Standing Tall, as the duo let the crowd know what to expect for the next hour or so.

Providing insight, the Monaghan man pauses between songs and states “I started this song in New York” where Sheridan lived for most of his teen years. His vocals have a polished American flavour to them as they carry over the enthusiastic crowd and juxtaposed with his scratchy guitar sound they serve well in drawing the audience in.

The single The Dreamer brings a great reaction. Graczyk’s stomping beat strapped tightly to Sheridan’s choppy guitar now has the crowed dancing.Machine and Endless Road reveals a softer slow tempo sound as he abandons his strumming hand and picks his way through these simple acoustic numbers but is forced to stop abruptly due to sound problems. However this doesn’t seem to phase him as he chooses to share the origins of his songs with the audience.

The show moves on with a pumped up version of Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison Blues, which brings the house down, and Sheridan too, as he intentionally falls flat on his back but manages to still play the guitar with great ease. Perhaps due to his dancing days with Riverdance, Sheridan’s performing persona stands to him as he commands the stage with the album title track ‘The Day You Live Forever’ and also The Game.

By now he’s cocky and gregarious with the crowd in front of him. He finishes with the single; Jigsaw, which only leaves people begging for more. He delivers in the form of The Dreamer as an encore, which is played for a second time tonight.

This was a tight well-worked performance from a talented singer-songwriter. Sheridan certainly delivered the goods throughout the entire performance and there is no doubt that he will do so in the future.

Alice Cooper: New Song Played Live

Posted in Music, New Music on May 25, 2011 by Tickets There

If you’re anything like Tickets There, you’re sitting in front of your computer watching the minutes tick away until June 8th when hard rock legends Def Leppard, Alice Cooper and Thin Lizzy will take the stage of Dublin’s O2 Arena for a night of iconic rock n roll classics.

In that spirit (and to help the time pass a little easier), we thought you might like this little nugget, a brand new Alice Cooper track titled ‘I’ll Eat Your Face’, which comes from Alice’s forthcoming album, Welcome 2 My Nightmare, a follow up to his 1975 début solo album. If we’re lucky, it may make an appearance next month when the grand master arrives in Eire.

Alice, we’ll never be worthy! Enjoy folks!

Solar Taxi – She Dies With Beautiful Teeth EP (Review)

Posted in EP Review, IRISH NOISE!, Music with tags , , , , , , , on May 24, 2011 by Tickets There

We liked them a year ago, now we love them. Waterford electro dance / dirty funk outfit, Solar Taxi, are back with a brand new EP and we think you need to hear it.

She Dies With Beautiful Teeth is comprised of seductively catchy and widely diversified tunes suited for every mood. In just four tracks, the band have displayed an incredible talent for writing some of the most original music you’ll hear this year. With opening track, ‘The Fool’ you’re given a taste of their well established diva dance style which is only toppled by the harder, guitar driven follow up, ‘Glass Hearts’. The styles jump from gritty 70’s funk, to rock to expansive trance, all stripped back to a stimulating melancholic state.

Peachy Peach changes things again with the bands funkier, soul side breaking through to give the EP a healthy dose of Umpf! Bass lovers would be advised to check out some full on, chucky action from Peter Vogelaar, closely flowed by some shredding guitar lead from James O’Halloran. Last track, ‘White Lights’ shows the final face of She Dies With Beautiful Teeth. An excellent song, completely different in style to the other three and one that really serves singer, Aisling Browne’s voice exceptionally well and shows a depth that really stands out against a toned down background.

Excellent work from start to finish and without a doubt a band you’ll be hearing a lot more about over the coming months. In a decade when bands are so determined to stand out, but yet are too afraid to follow the long established guidelines of popular music, it’s comforting to know there’s still a few acts out there who can do it all.

Beastmen – EP2 (Review)

Posted in Music with tags , , , , , , , , , on May 23, 2011 by Tickets There

Ah hell yes! Beastmen are back with a new EP, a more spacious sound but! they ain’t forgetting the massive helpings of their guitar laden, riff filled instrumental metal that made us like them in the first place. We’re slightly late getting this review up but better late than never. The lads are hard at work on their 3rd EP so now’s your chance to check out what’s come before.

‘Horsehead Nebula’ kicks things off with fearsome power and energy. Full on galactic-electro dementia with massive helpings of ass kicking riffage! ‘Sunday’ is a little faster once the voice over’s and distant sirens fall off. The drums and guitars really cut a place for themselves and create a solid frame that explodes through the dense wall of noise that precedes their arrival.

‘The Streets of LV42’6 continues the post rock, electro vibes from Horsehead Nebula, but again explodes forth with some high toned guitars that wrap themselves around a sinister melody. Excellent tense/building in the structure and no sings of this EP letting up.

‘Intrö’ drops all the abundant space effects and retreats to the bands always excellent basic guitar, bass and drum formula for two and a half minutes of excellent instrumental rock. Beastmen always avoid the pit falls of knocking out normal tunes minus the vocals and always give the songs a proper playing field and Intrö is just another taste of this. El Maniaco Contra el Monstruo is exactly what you think it’ll be. Full-on Spanish styled desperado / Tarantino ‘situation ‘ music. Great finish to an excellent EP.

As mentioned, the band are working on EP3 and Tickets There cannot wait. Stream EP2 now on their official Bandcamp page and prepare to let a new band into your life.

Seamus O’Muineachain – Conflicts at the Sermon EP (Review)

Posted in EP Review, IRISH NOISE!, Music with tags , , , on May 23, 2011 by Tickets There

Looking to put a little transcendence into your day? If so, you’d be justified in checking out Seamus O’Muineachain’s brand new EP, Conflicts at the Sermon. Comprised of three original pieces, the EP is a dark, haunting collection of eerie melodic compositions, mixed through traditional Irish structures (Most notably ‘Away With The Fairies’ bearing the brunt of that description). For classical lovers, ‘I’m Trying To Escape’ is the real highlight with it’s rolling piano melodies and depth.

No we’re not used to reviewing classical music but this is a lovely EP worth checking out. It’s dark in tone but lovely to have in the background for your relaxing Monday. Stream the whole EP for free now at Seamus’ official BandCamp page.

Ryan Sheridan (Interview 11th May 2011)

Posted in Interview, Music with tags , , , , , , , , on May 22, 2011 by goodgutterpress

With a debut album ‘The Day You Live Forever’ in the bag, Ryan Sheridan brings his brand of high temp acoustic rock to Set Theatre, Kilkenny tonight. With single ‘Jigsaw’ getting loads of airplay and supporting slots with The Script recently in the O2 the Monaghan man is set for big things. Tickets There caught up with Sheridan before the gig to talk about the new record, living inNew York and Riverdance.

Tickets There: Firstly, how’s the tour going so far?

Ryan: The tour is going brilliant so far. It’s full crowds every night, you know we’ve had a great response. People already know some of the songs from the album so I’m over the moon about that. Yeah it’s going really really well.

Tickets There: “The day you live forever” was released on Friday. Can you tell me a little bit about it? For example, how would you describe the album?

Ryan: It has been along time coming – this album. I think it’s a bit of a storyboard of my life that started years ago. There are some songs in there that were conceived in New York and then I started writing for the album so it’s a bit of a storyboard. There’s a bit of everything for everybody kind of thing.

Tickets There: You left Ireland in your teens and went to the US to perform with Riverdance. With so much time spent over there are there many American influences on the record?

Ryan: I got immersed in bluegrass in a big way because I’ve a bit of a traditional head so I would have to say I was drawn to that and that comes out on the album. Also Jeff Buckley was very influential around that time and Tom Waits.

Tickets There: Has performing as a dancer for Riverdance influenced your musical style?

Ryan: Yeah it definitely has. I was away since I was fifteen years old until I was twenty-two so its definitely influenced the live shows. Plus I was a fiddle player at one stage so that influenced my style as well.

Tickets There: In 2004 you moved from New York to Glasgow. What brought you to Scotland?

Ryan: I came back to New York after being a way for a little bit but I didn’t fancy it at the time so a friend of mine was playing music in Glasgow and that’s when I moved over there and decided to start a band. I felt I wanted to expand a bit. I was kind of a singer songwriter on the acoustic guitar and then I went to Glasgow and that was more of a band sense there. And I think there things were a little bit more experimental. I was trying to get a few things out of my head. You know I was working on guitar riffs and I was trying to develop a bigger sound.

Tickets There: And did you find it easy to make that progression from being a dancer with Riverdance to writing songs?

Ryan: Yeah it was, but it was also exciting and it was new. It all started in New York doing the pubs and clubs. But when I was in New York I was living on my own for a long time as well so you have to channel it some ways and song writing seemed to do that and so Glasgow took things further again. It was more instrumental and I wanted a bigger sound

Tickets There: What brought you back home to Ireland?

Ryan: I was sick of partying in Glasgow and so I decided to come back and try out Dublin for a while and I was looking for a drummer and I got on the internet and I found Artur my percussionist and that’s how we met for the first time.

Tickets There: I went to see you play on the weekend and it was great, I really enjoyed it. It was obvious to me that there is a strong musical relationship between you and Artur. You seem to have formed a tight unit, which for some acts takes years.

Ryan: Yeah it’s kind of strange. You know a fellow from Poland and a fellow form Monaghan playing together. But we started busking and jamming and it blended together really well. He’s hard to listen to sometimes and musically he’s alright [laughs].

Tickets There: You were first noticed by the manager of the Olympia theatre – Brian Whitehead. Can you tell me a little bit about how that happened?

Ryan: We were busking just last year in Temple Bar and lucky enough we got moved a few times by the Guards and then we said we try this one more spot. We started playing there and then I got a business card thrown into the guitar case. And then at the end of the day I was looking at it and I was thinking I know that name so I gave him a ring and it all just took off from there. A year later the album is out and I’m touring around the country. It was just meant to be.

Tickets There: The album is out on Rubyworks who also has the likes of Gavin Friday Sinead O’Connor and Fight Like Apes on their roster. What are they like as label?

Ryan:  Rubyworks are great. They’re very hands on. It’s a small independent label so. It’s possible a lot of the time to be a small fish in a small pond

Tickets There: Joe Chester produced the album. What was he like to work with?

Ryan: He was brilliant I have to say. He took us through our paces. He told us when to start and stop and helped us get what we needed out of our heads. And I’d say he helped to bring a very organic feel to it.

Tickets There: You played Oxygen last year and you are playing again this year. What is it like to play the festival circuit compared to smaller venues?

Ryan: I have to say I love the festivals. It’s just a totally different atmosphere. Everyone there for the music you know and people are tipsy all day and having the craic. Plus I think the songs sound great on the bigger stages. The bigger the better I say.
