Ash – Carnal Love (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , , , , , on July 31, 2010 by Tickets There

If there’s one song in the second part of Ash’s A-Z series that’s well and truly worth getting excited about it’s their new single, Carnal Love. Here they are, five tracks from the end and they come out with one the best songs of the whole series.

The verse is nice, stripped back, non-invasive and full of highly suggestive sexual references and all round warped in love, fantasy and naughtiness. The chorus notches things up with guitars a go go, harmonies and vocal changes to immerse you in all things Ash.

As always it’s catchy, it’s perfect in structure and overly appealing to the ears. Check the video out below (still not sure if we like it) and hear it for yourself. Official comes out Monday.

Zombie Cops – Taking Lives (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , on July 29, 2010 by Tickets There

Review: Stephen Byrne (Originally posted @ Alternative Irish Music Review)

Taking Lives is the second single from Dublin’s Zombie Cops is a complete change in tact from the excellent debut Win Some Loose Some. The song builds slowly from a progish “Down On The Upside” era Soundgarden guitar intro underlayed by a “On a Rope” type rhythm figure.

The call and response vocals of Kevin Fagan and Jamie Hughes work well throughout the entire song. Its back to more familiar musical territory for the verse and choruses as Jimmy Eat World, Open Hand, and Incubus influences are once again apparent. With a touch of Editors guitar trickery the song slows before ending on a flourish with a recap of the main riff.

Zombie Cops launch Taking Lives in Whelan’s of Wexford St. Dublin on Friday 6th of August and are also appearing at Danny Byrnes Garden of Music Festival in Mullingar on Sunday 8th of August.

Zombie Cops are worth the admission fee alone for their excellent version of Don’t You Want Me Baby.

MyTuneRox! – New Music based Social Networking Site Launching Soon

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, News with tags , , , , , , , on July 27, 2010 by Tickets There

Bandcamp may be taking over the reins of leading online musical display case for bands these days but the old social networking model isn’t over yet. MyTuneRox is the latest in online music networking and it’s all based right here in Ireland.

If you’ve used MySpace before you know the drill. Pics, friends, blogs and tunes. It’s aimed mostly at Irish bands from what we’ve gathered and there’s almost 200 bands already signed up.

The site kicks off officially launches next month but the beta version is up and running now. Even Tickets There has found time to throw a profile together…but for the life of us, we cannot figure out how to link to our home page so we’ll update the Follow Tickets There widget as soon as we do.

Check details of the sites Battle of The Bands @ Hotpress

And don’t forget to visit them @ www.mytunerox.com

Will Tickets There start doing MyTuneRox! Reviews? Yes, I believe we will 🙂

MySpace Review – Goatboy

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, MySpace Review with tags , , , , , , , on July 22, 2010 by Tickets There

Review: Stephen Byrne (Originally posted @ Alternative Irish Music Review)

Its hard to believe that Goatboy emerged from the fumbling progish offerings of the Screaming Skies to become one of Ireland’s finest singer/songwriters.

Winter Tears is a fine ballad ephemeral, yet gusty. Akin to Arcade Fire and Bon Ivor. Mark O’Sullivan’s rich reverbed vocals resonate beautifully throughout all of his songs, especially so in New Moon where the intelligent mimicking of the harmony vocals by the piano, electric guitar, and strings, build to a very earthy sing-a-long chorus.

With For Your Love its as if James Taylor and Death Cab for Cutie have collaborated in the Bermuda Triangle the juxtaposition of pure country slide guitar led verses and uptempo alt rock guitar choruses shouldn’t work, but work they do.

Japanese City Nights is a fantastic Electro instrumental. The bass and Synth riffs play off each other beautifully and its also the standout track from Indiecator Records World Cup themed compilation “Fastforward”.

Goatboy plays Pick for the Picnic at Crawdaddy on the 22nd of July.

Ash – Summer Snow (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , , , on July 18, 2010 by Tickets There

Another two weeks have passed and this time Tickets There guarantees you it’s been worth the wait because Summer Snow, Ash’s latest single from their A-Z series is a wonderful piece of music.

They’re sticking with the more simplistic style of writing that’s dominated the second part of the series but they’ve brought the guitars and bass right to the front for a thundering chorus that seems to conquer the rest of the song. Intro kicks off with a back n forth guitars, some background keyboards and Tim’s voice right at the forefront and sounding good n strong. Short, perfectly written and involving, everything you could want from an Ash track.

I think we’re tapped out with the words for Ash. Unlike them, we can’t produce fresh material every two weeks and that’s why we’re a lowly viewed poxy little blog and they’re the kick ass heroes of Irish pop rock. I certainly hope ye all caught their set at Oxegen and you’ve started your ‘come back to Dublin soon’ letters to their official site. We’ll see you in two weeks for the fifth last review of the series. Until then, enjoy Summer Snow.

The Murder Clues – Any Other Way (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , on July 16, 2010 by Tickets There

The Murder Clues are back with their third single. Any Other Way might be one of their older tracks but some studio time has revamped this tune to new heights giving it a brilliant new lease of life.

Barley stopping for a moment, the track bounces around with charismatic singer Brian’s vocals really starting to tale more and more shape as the years go on backed by some chunky bass snippets, pumped guitars and some furious drumming that really gives the song an adrenaline filled backbone.

The Murder Clues really are going in the right direction and we think it’s time you went and checked them out. Stand by for another post in 5,4,3,2…

The Aftermath – Lost Possession (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , , on July 14, 2010 by Tickets There

Ladies and gentlemen, The Aftermath are back. Longford /Mullingar & Leed’s favorite pop rock band have returned with a fantastic summery, upbeat and irresistibly catchy single from their up and coming second album.

Filled with the Cronin brother’s hooks, changes, choppy structures and full on beat attacks, Lost Possession is a worthy contender for one of the best tunes the lads have released. Tickets There have been playing this tune for roughly four hours now and we still can’t get enough. If we thought The Wall’s new single defined the summer, Lost Possession will drive it home.

For the last year, the lads have been huddled into studios across Ireland and England including London’s legendary Abbey Road Studios with Ger McDonnell and Karl Odlum recording tracks for the next album and today’s first single is a great sign of things to come.

Road Records To Close

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, News with tags , , , on July 14, 2010 by Tickets There

Well, it’s happening again. Today, beloved independent Dublin record store, Road Records announced it will close it’s doors on July 24th for the last time.

After a massive campaign by bands, customers and the proprietors to stop our recession from closing the store last year it seems things have once again taken a turn for the worst and owners Dave and Julie can no longer keep the place in business.

This shop has been at the forefront of the Irish music business for over a decade and today’s news will come as a blow to young and underground acts who’s outlets for selling their music become more limited by the day. In the last year two of Tickets There’s favorite record stores have closed it’s doors and it’s very sad that Road has to be the unavoidable third.

To read Dave and Julie’s full statement, visit Road Records Official Website and you’ll also find details of their final sale which starts this Saturday, July 17th.

Brains – Strange Meat (EP Review)

Posted in EP Review, IRISH NOISE!, Music with tags , , , , , , , , on July 12, 2010 by Tickets There

Recession or no recession, this country never stops producing good music and Cork band, Brains are the latest example of that. Formed in 2009, the band play what they describe as ‘blackened rock n roll’ which loosely translated means ‘American styled stoner rock / metal. Not that this comment really does the band justice because their debut EP, Strange Meat is packed with little gems and the odd one we’re still getting our heads around.

Wolfbeast opens things up and we still haven’t decided if we like it or not. It’s a strange one that slips between comical and pretty savage. The chunky bass, the Hammond organ and explosive guitars are excellent and the singer’s voice is powerful during the verses but something happens in the bridge and things go off course a little.  Maybe it’s just because the song is called Wolfbeast and we don’t know the band well enough to let them away it.

Second song 3ft Wide 7ft Tall was the other one we weren’t full sure about at first. Given a few spins though it quickly convinced us to keep going with this band. Opening with a doom, piano / guitar – slowed down black metal styled intro, the song quickly changes into a lighter pop rock styled verse before the booming guitars return for the chorus. Pretty funny in places but works well as a serious number because the music’s there to back it up.

Things really kick off with the guitar driven That Awful Witch which is chuck-full of dueling guitar leads, a funky chunky bass line and some very catchy hooks. An excellent number and a welcome sign that this band are not just here to sing about Wolfbeast and massive women (3ft Wide 7ft Tall isn’t about women TT, listen properly next time – Ed)….then again, AC/DC made a career out of doing that.

Black on Black really gets the full on, hard rock buzz going. Opening with another simple yet atmospheric bass intro, the song is once again filled with hooky guitars, riffs, a belting chorus and some dark fantasy lyrics. The guitar explosion at the end is reminiscent of the Thin Lizzy and sits perfectly well with the slowed down, seventies tone on the song.

Muddy Water opens with a riff that’s become synonymous with the band’s sound after just five songs. It gets a little repetitive but the song itself is great, broken down blues rock with some iconic dark metal sounds thrown in. Lovely guitar work and another credible song to make this a damn fine EP.

Things ain’t over yet however as the fine bumpkin (love that word) guitar intro to the EP’s title track kicks in. Strange Meat breaks the trend of the a crunchy bass intro and dives head first into a chaotic, raw guitar driven track. Tender moments, noisy moments – another winner.

Excellent EP, full of very enjoyable moments and definitely a band to watch if you’re a fan of seventies heavy metal or heavy rock. Like we said there’s a few moments in there where you’re trying to figure out which side you’re on but when Tickets There sees these guys live, we’ll be there singing along to Wolfbeast as loud as we can. Oh, and did we mention you can download it for free from This Location?

MySpace Review – The Hot Sprokets

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, MySpace Review with tags , , , , , on July 12, 2010 by Tickets There

Ya know, we’re getting close to the 100 reviews mark for this series and the good bands just keep on coming. Technically, that’s like 70 good/great/amazing bands from Ireland that we’ve found in the last two years and still doesn’t include some of the best in the country. Considering how half-arsed we run this blog, we’re willing to bet there’s at least double that number still waiting to be discovered. MySpace Reviews forever and long may everything come up Millhouse.

Today’s band came to our attention when we noticed they were playing our least favorite Dublin venue, The Odessa Club this week. Fortunately, the Live @ The Odessa night attracts some really great names so you ignore the thoughts of men in pink polo shirts sipping white wine and comparing their Beemer interiors and focus on the bands at hand. The Hot Sprockets play retro revival sixties rock with several helpings of bluegrass, KOL style licks and hooky guitars. We here at TT don’t like KOL but we’ll happily take the rest.

As usual, we’ve never seen the band live or heard their album.

Opening with the busy bodied Honey Skippin’, things get off to a great start. It’s robust, rocking and instantly friendly. Excellent number, our favorite of the lot and a great sign of things to come from the band. Sleep Shake’s next (skipping the live number) and it’s a much more relaxed affair. There are some bumpkin melody guitars, some croaky vocals, a real catchy, acoustic White Stripes chorus and everything else sounds good too….nice!

Solid Gold intros with a good chunky bass, some harmonica licks and a good old fashioned guitars playing some not too pushed blues rock. Similar in structure to Sleep Shake but with more of an edge, definitely another one worth listening to.

The final two songs seem to be much earlier work by the band. On Your Own is alright, wouldn’t be mental about it. It’s not awful or anything but it’s just lacking in character when compared to the previous three tracks. Creepin is more upbeat but the vocals seem intent on replicating the KOL style just too much for our liking. The songs could be great and we’d like to hear it re-recorded with the singer’s newer style and then we’ll give it another go.

All in all, one to watch. The newer material sounds fantastic and boasts great potential. The Hot Sprokets are a  band Tickets There wants to hear more from. Visit their MySpace now by Clicking Here, then come back and bitch about how great the KOL are or how the singer sounds nothing at all like them in the earlier material and this site is run by dickheads for douche bags.

ACTION | PAUSE | REACTION – REWIND (EP Review)

Posted in EP Review, IRISH NOISE!, Music with tags , , , , on July 10, 2010 by Tickets There

Review: Stephen Byrne (Originally posted @ Alternative Irish Music Review)

Action Pause Reaction display much potential on their debut EP Rewind. The title tack starts of with a drum beat reminiscent of Everlong before Ronan O’Leary churns out a riff that Josh Homme would be proud of.

See the Light of Day is a slightly more passive outing akin to Pavement or Jay Mascis and the Fog while Breaking Under the Strain is highly influenced by Northern Ireland’s finest punk rock band Therapy? it contains more high tempo chainsaw guitar riffs.

Unfortunately all these fine riffs are lost in muddy mixing and production. The drums especially suffer from a very thin sound. There is no kick to them and the cymbals wash over everything. Studio inexperience and financial restraints have probably stopped this from being a much better end product.

However, a trip to a proper studio with a proper engineer could make them one of the best the rock trios in the land. Until then, go and see them live.

Review: The Walls – Live @ The Odessa, Dublin (July 8th, 2010)

Posted in Gig Review, IRISH NOISE!, Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 9, 2010 by Tickets There

Recession or no recession, the Odessa hasn’t changed a bit. Tickets There’s willing to bet that every man who gets their hair styled in Dublin is in tonight to sample the fine food, drink finest bottles of wine from the bar and soak up the pompous, ego pumped atmosphere. Why do we do bother? Because Live At The Odessa just won’t stop bringing good bands into the fecking place.

As usual, Tickets There (purposely) manages to miss tonight’s support. Last thing we need is a singer songwriter to get us in the mood for the legendary Wall brothers. Instead, trips to local McKenna’s in Dun Laoghaire and O’Reilly’s under Tara are all the support we need. With Murphy’s in hand (of course they don’t have Guinness, that would be too common), it’s time to stand back and soak up some relaxing new material from The Walls.

Opening with their newest single, Carrying The Fire, Steve and Joe begin the show solo with some added beats courtesy of the musical prodigy that is Joe Wall. Swapping vocals, multiple instruments and harmonies mark the early set with their experimental new live style adding a nice vibe to the show. Rather than bringing a full band on tour, The Walls are testing out a new audio-visual show which allows the rest of the band to appear on a screen behind the brothers, letting them play and interact with each other. Surprisingly enough, this new style of performing loses little of the vibe you get from a full band show with everything rehearsed and timed to a T.

Treating fans to a nice selection of material from their up and coming third album, Stop The Lights, the band are keeping their stripped back, cooler than Alaska sound going with atmospheric, ear pleasing tunes. Phantom Power sees Joe take over vocal duties with Steve mostly adding background harmonies. Having never gotten a chance to see The Walls live before tonight, Tickets There’s pleasantly surprised to see Joe knows his way around a lead guitar just as well as a bass.

Not to shy away from their older material, the band manage to knock out classics such as Passing Through, To The Bright and Shinning Sun and a thunderous performance of Drowning Pool before closing the main set and retuning for an encore comprised of Rusty Old River, a song they originally recorded as The Stunning and the Walls very own, Bone Deep.

With the gig over, it’s time to scraper and seek refuge in the cozy confines of The Stags Head with a good, Dublin born pint of the black stuff. Great night from a great band, Tickets There have our eyes focused on the next albums release. More Walls in 2010 will be a lovely thing.
