MySpace Review – Cap Pas Cap

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, MySpace Review with tags , , , on January 21, 2011 by Tickets There

Right, enough excuses and delays. It’s time to get back to Tickets There’s roots rather than fecking editor Rob’s passions. Cap Pas Cap is a band that bored us to tears when we saw them live. Awful stuff, such a dreadfully boring show. Think they supported Jape in Tripod, but don’t quote us on that. As always with Tickets There, its second chance time so we decided Cap Pas Cap needed another looksy. Without basing the sound on performance this time, it’s actually quite ok, for what it is. In theory this shouldn’t be a MySpace review as we have seen them but it’s Friday, stick your rules!

The whole Joy Division revival thing that’s going on is getting a tad stale. Music minus the soul that makes it legendary but guised in layers of ‘this is actually something deep, deep, deep below the surface’. It’s so deep no human ear can’t detect it, that’s why we only have a few hundred part-time fans, cause they’re the ones who get it. Oh, Sex is On Fire, lets dance! What does all that rubbish mean? It means bands are able to pass of sub-standard, repetitive, entertainment lacking / un-heartfelt mush and claim it to be this enormously complex, thronged with diversity despite sounding like it was written in three seconds Here’s the thing though (don’t ya know), it’ll be respected 20 years in the future because this sh*t right here is well before it’s time.

Utter rubbish and it’s our duty (volunteers, not that anyone actually wants us doing this) to wade through all the *BS and find songs/bands that accidently slip up and write something that comes close to enjoyable music. If you’re in the right mood, Mirrors from Cap Pas Cap will help. Imagine being heavily buzzed with a whitey in a Dutch nightclub toilet with heavy trance music blaring in and no water available. If this song came on, you would kill yourself. If you’re perfectly fine and just a bit drunk around 1.30ish in the morning, then Mirrors sums up the ‘in the thick of it now’ feeling you get when the safety net of another hour or two drinking is left but you have reached the point of happy out.

‘In The Thick of it’ done, not yet. The house / pop / electro styling’s of Friends will liven things back up a bit. Can’t imagine watching it live with any great interest but hand this to the DJ and there will be muchos schmoozey posing and trance style mock dance shapes galore in Whelan’s. Not a bad tune but very, very downbeat so if you’re happy out in mid-town, find some KISS. Wait till she dumps you before hitting this needle.

Tickets There out – for now. Check out the Cap Pas Cap MySpace at Cap Pas Cap…..MySpace

Review: KISS – Live @ Wembley Arena, London (May 12th, 2010)

Posted in Gig Review, Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on May 31, 2010 by Tickets There

Makeup on, leather jacket and studded gloves check, hair up, pints down, KISS has arrived in London and so has Tickets There. Wembley Arena may not be the most impressive building on the planet but when several thousand KISS fans descend, it (like all venues that host the legendary American thunder Gods) turns into the Taj Mahal.

Less than a week after their spectacular show in Dublin’s O2 Arena, KISS are in London to play the first of two nights in North London’s premier hard rock venue and there was no way in hell Tickets There was missing it. Unfortunately, we can’t say the same for the support band Taking Dawn, who we managed to miss for the second time in a row. No worries though, the band everyone’s here to see are in the building and everything’s set to make this one hell of a memorable night.

Having seen KISS twice before and going though the ritual marathon Alive I-IV session in the days building up the shows, we thought we were prepared to finally get a grasp on the band and see them as four individuals in makeup playing a rock show like any other. Wrong as usual but happy to admit it. The minute you hear the ‘You Wanted the Best’ Intro, everything goes out the window. KISS’s arrival on stage feels like the second coming as Gene, Paul and Tommy appear on a lifter high above the Eric’s drum kit belting out Modern Day Delilah like they would any of their classics. Knowing some of the crowd may be uneasy with a newer number, Paul instantly calms all woes with a blistering assault on Cold Gin and no-one is left in any doubt about the power this band still commands after almost four decades in the business.

From there, the night becomes a blur of musicianship, showmanship and all out glitz, glory with the best stage show on the planet. Classics such as Deuce, Firehouse, Crazy Nights, 100,000 Years, Calling Doctor Love, Shock Me and Let Me Go Rock N Roll build the main set. On its own, a fine collection of KISS’s back catalog but topped with the additional live fire breathing, rocket firing guitars, stage risers and a bazooka, they instantly become everyone’s wet dreams.

If they left it there, fans would walk home happy. KISS doesn’t want you to be happy, they want to send you home to blinded by their power and, they do just that. All the stops are pulled out for the closing songs. Gene’s classic blood spitting, stage flying bass solo leads into a booming version of I Love It Loud from the top of the lightening rig, Paul and Tommy’s guitars set the stage ablaze with the definitive Love Gun, that see’s the entire arena mass together in their love for these iconic characters, The incredible Black Diamond and Destroyer classic, Detroit Rock City and its massive cluster of explosions and fire close the main set, setting KISS up as 2010’s conquering heroes. But they ain’t finished yet!

As if it all wasn’t enough, KISS turn up the heat and everything else with a five song encore that includes sing along favorites, Lick It Up, Shout It Out Loud, I Was made for Loving You (sang by Paul from his revolving stage in the middle of the crowd), God Gave You Rock N Roll II and the monumental, career defining Rock And Roll All Night. House lights on, a never ending mass of confetti filling the arena’s enormous space and America’s greatest rock n roll band performing one of the greatest rock songs of all time to a packed house of adoring fans! Is there any way to beat that for a closing moment? Not a chance!

Review: KISS – Live @ The O2 Arena, Dublin (Point, ahem) (May 7th, 2010)

Posted in Gig Review, Music with tags , , , , on May 20, 2010 by Tickets There

You may have been wondering why, after all the fuss, the posts, the reminders and constant exclamations of excitment about KISS’s first Irish show we never followed through with the actual review. Well it;s simple, we went to see KISS in London.

Now that all the fire works and fuss is over, we’ve finally gotten round to putting pen to paper but instead of wasting the review here, we’ve given it to the good folks at Golden Plec. Check it Out!

Lights, Pyro’s, moving stage sets, explosions, blood spitting, fire breathing, flying rock stars, Tommy Thayer, Eric Singer, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley and thirty seven years of classics from Americas greatest rock n roll band. KISS have finally arrived in Dublin to play their very first Irish show and give the emerald Isle branch of the KISS army a night they’ll never forget.

Describing the excitement and anticipation before a KISS show is almost as difficult as describing the magic of the performance itself. Most Irish KISS fans have only ever seen the band in pictures and on film, but those mediums only catch a glimpse of the power, the energy and show stopping, jaw dropping charisma and mesmerizing presence the band hold on stage. In reality, KISS holds a power over their fans almost unlike any other. Fictionally, they present themselves as larger than life superheroes, capable of catapulting you into another dimension of pleasure and rock n roll and in reality, they do just that.

ABBA More Rock N’ Roll Than KISS?

Posted in Music, News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on December 15, 2009 by Tickets There

Tickets There is troubled. I read about this earlier today and I thought, why bother?. Why bother writing an article about an establishment that flies in the face of everything its origins are based on? Today, The Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame (in Cleveland, Ohio) voted in favor of accepting Genesis (Fair enough), The Stooges (Fair Enough although they were technically punk if you go by definition), Jimmy Cliff (Ska / Reggae singer…..someone want to explain his presence in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame to me?) and the Dancin’ Queens themselves, ABBA into the hall in 2010. These acts (and a couple more, not keeping this long) were voted in ahead of LL Cool J (Fair Enough), Donna Summer (Damn right fair enough), The Red Hot Chilli Peppers (Hmm…little rocky but technically a funk rock band but if the Stooges can swing it, so can the Chilli’s) and finally, the greatest rock n roll phenomenon America has ever and will ever manage to produce, the mighty KISS.

Now, take one stroll down the main page of Tickets There and you’ll see we’re clearly biased. Obviously there is a great love for KISS on this site (and if you couldn’t tell before, then the constant capitalization of their name should spell it out), but TT would hope that people out there, with little or no love for the band can agree that KISS deserves to be included in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame before ABBA. I would hope that every single band in the world that ever used a distortion pedal would be included in the rock n roll hall of fame before ABBA. What’s next? Are they going to start reserving an annual inductee space for the winner of X-Factor?

The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame has made many, many decision mistakes in the past such as Run DMC and Madonna to name just two, but this is an original one. It’s like passing up Aerosmith in favor of Westlife. ABBA may have some of the catchiest wee pop numbers under the sun and no-ones trying to call them a terrible band or anything but they’re not rock n roll. KISS are and they’re good at it.

We’ll stop this rant before it get’s silly (many, many paragraphs and bracket comments deleted since I started) but I’ll say this, KISS are better off. The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is out of touch and the last thing KISS needs is to be associated with that un-creditable institution and we urge them to reject their invite to join, when the offer is eventually made. Follow the Sex Pistols and let them know you don’t care.

(As Fans, Tickets There urges you to join a FACE BOOK campaign called ‘Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame, you can KISS my ass‘ and show them exactly what you think of their decision)

KISS Announce Dublin Show / European Tour

Posted in Music, News with tags , , , , , on November 24, 2009 by Tickets There

I’m speechless. Yesterday I found out that Tickets There’s all time favorite live band are playing their very first (I think) show in Dublin’s O2 Arena. KISS are undeniably the greatest live phenomenon touring under the good time rock n roll banner these days and despite hard efforts from AC/DC, Def Leppard, Whitesnake and Journey last year, TT feels that KISS are going to send all those bands packing as a distant memory.

Now, normally I would have been blogging something like this before I’d finished reading the story but I’ve lost all interest in Tickets There. Won’t go into the reasons why because this is KISS’s time so here’s the details.

KISS, the world’s greatest live band are coming to Europe next year as part of their tour for their latest album, Sonic Boom. They’re currently in the middle of the US leg and the band have promised that the European shows will have a new stage, new costumes, new set list and new everything…except the classics. The tour kicks off in Dublin on the 7th of May and the group will spend over two months playing some of Europe’s biggest arenas and festivals. More dates are expected to be added soon. Please find the current list below.

KISS – Sonic Boom (Album Review)

Posted in Album Review, Music, News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 8, 2009 by Tickets There

kiss-sonic-boom

Alright Tickets There readers. You wanted the best!….but there was a problem with their website so you came here!

Sonic Boom is here folks. KISS, the hottest band in the world have finally released their first album of new material in eleven years. That’s almost as long as Chinese Democracy!!. So, after all the hype, all the arguments and praise. After all the promotion, fanaticism and general shouting, what does Tickets There think of it?? Well, it’s a grower and it’s still growing!!

Kicking things off is the monster riff filled…ehm, monster, Modern Day Delilah, the albums flagship single and one of the heaviest tracks on the record. There’s almost nothing here but the band showing off their talents on the highest possible level. Everything about this song is savage and I think it’s settled into the hearts of KISS fans around the world. Off course everyone will need to see it in action for it to become a regular on the live circuit but musically, it’s got the goods. At first glance, second track Russian Roulette sounds a little Swiss. Gene’s voice isn’t as ferocious as fans would be used to and the bass sounds like it could have been notched up a little and made dirtier. The chorus, well it just sounds a little Nickelback or something. After a few goes it starts to warm up a little and you become more comfortable with it. Not the strongest song on the record and one that may be forgotten further down the line.

Never Enough see’s classic KISS galore back in the frame. Paul shouts his classic ‘Oh Yeah!’ (Which is always a sign of fun things to come’). Dirty, sleazy, bluesy and a sing along chorus. Never Enough is a good solid rock track and Paul’s voice sounds terrific, great solo aswell. Yes I Know (Nobody’s Perfect) has one of those definitive KISS intro’s. Blues rock mixed with the ‘danger’ we all love. Gene takes the mike back again and this time he shows us exactly why we love him. This is classic KISS with a basic message of ‘take off your cloths!’. It’s poppy, fun and Klassic KISS (see what I did? I replaced the C in Classic with K. What, not funny now because I pointed it out? Fair enough). Stand is an odd one. Not really sure if we’re meant to like this one but there’s no denying it’s catchy as hell and full on balls to the wall arena rock! Stanley and Simmons trade of vocals and it works perfectly. Bit dramatic, bit Swiss but damn it this is KISS! Swiss rhymes with their name so they can do whatever the hell they like. Personally, I think this is a deadly track!

Hot and Cold is another of Gene’s tracks and it’s another perfect rock n roll KISS anthem. ‘if it’s too hot, you’re too cold and if it’s too loud, you’re too old!’ What more can I say? Great solo again, classic Paul rhythm and Gene, a Gene, we forgive you for Russian Roulette. Anyone who can say ‘baby feel my tower of power’ is a legend and you can’t get more black and white that that.

All For the Glory is next and it’s sung by Peter Criss replacement, Eric Singer. What’s it like? Different, Eric’s vocals are top notch and the music is spot on. Classic KISS music given a fresh coat of paint with Eric leading the way. Makes a good change of pace and keeps everything running smoothly. Danger Us is a great number. Hard guitars, Stanley front and center and a catchy, excellent fun chorus. It’s everything KISS should be. Mixes references to women, booze and hell raising. If that Ain’t KISS, I don’t know what is. Two parts trouble baby! Gene Simmons comes back with the excellent I’m An Animal. He doesn’t try and growl this one out and instead displays a totally different side to his vocal range during the verse….and he pulls it off. This one could have been plucked right out of Destroyer. The lads have really managed to find their sound again and get back to doing what they love. Some classic Ace sounding guitar work here aswell.

Second last song, When Lightening Strikes makes some good use of a cowbell and some classic seventies American highway blues guitars. Written by Stanley and Tommy Thayer with Tommy taking vocals, the song doesn’t sound like a KISS song in the convention sense. It’s more like something ZZ Top or Free could have come out with. Thayer’s voice is great and really suits the sound, only made better with Paul’s harmonies giving it more scope. Really enjoyable rock n roll track with some great singing and nice guitar work. Final track, Say Yeah’s intro sounds uncomfortably familiar to Bruce Springsteen’s Radio No Where. Then again, he ripped off I Was Made for Loving You last year so now they’re even. The rest of the song is pretty sweet. Another great Ace sounding solo, colossal chorus and general arena filling, good time, KISS traits.

After only being on sale for two days, the album is on track to appear at #1 on the US Billboard Top 100 with sales off 150/175,000. In Tickets There’s opinion, it’s well deserved. Sonic Boom is a great KISS album and one that’s got more than enough material to keep fans digging through it. If 2008 belonged to AC/DC then 2009/10 will belong to KISS.
