Ash – Summer Snow (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , , , on July 18, 2010 by Tickets There

Another two weeks have passed and this time Tickets There guarantees you it’s been worth the wait because Summer Snow, Ash’s latest single from their A-Z series is a wonderful piece of music.

They’re sticking with the more simplistic style of writing that’s dominated the second part of the series but they’ve brought the guitars and bass right to the front for a thundering chorus that seems to conquer the rest of the song. Intro kicks off with a back n forth guitars, some background keyboards and Tim’s voice right at the forefront and sounding good n strong. Short, perfectly written and involving, everything you could want from an Ash track.

I think we’re tapped out with the words for Ash. Unlike them, we can’t produce fresh material every two weeks and that’s why we’re a lowly viewed poxy little blog and they’re the kick ass heroes of Irish pop rock. I certainly hope ye all caught their set at Oxegen and you’ve started your ‘come back to Dublin soon’ letters to their official site. We’ll see you in two weeks for the fifth last review of the series. Until then, enjoy Summer Snow.

Ash – Instinct (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , , , on July 4, 2010 by Tickets There

Another fantastically sunny Sunday here in Dublin and what better way to celebrate than by closing the curtains, straining the tired eyes and listening to the latest single from Ash. Tickets There only managed to reach bed around eight am this morning so we’re relying on the Co. Down boys to wake us up more than coffee ever could with a happy, jumpy, summery feel good hit. It may take longer than we’d like, but they get us there.

Instinct is the latest single in the A-Z series and it’s worthy of the title. Took a wee while to get into this one as it’s not as engrossing as quality Ash material and not a massive departure in styles from many previous A-Z tracks. It does manage to grow quickly though but will doubtfully ever become one of the more memorable numbers from the bands career.

Saying that, the song boasts some great dance pop beats, a brilliant beefy bass and a savage guitar solo so there’s plenty to make it worth your while giving this one a few spins. Tim’s voice also has some sternness to the tone which gives the track a backbone and stops it from becoming one of their few ‘avoid’ numbers.

See ya’ll in two weeks for Single U, one of the last releases in the series (sob, what’ll we do without our regular Ash reviews?? You TELL ME????)

Hop over to Ash-Official.com now, to hear Instinct for yourself.

Ash – Spheres (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , , , on June 20, 2010 by Tickets There

It’s Fathers day and what better gift could any father ask for than a brand spanking new tune from Ireland’s leading pop rock trio, Ash. Single S, Spheres is officially available for streaming today and given a few goes, it’s proven to be one of the best from the second half of the A-Z Series.

Rather than going for the simple three chords, catchy build Ash are famous for, Sphere’s is a little more complex, deep and darker. There’s an eerie piano melody laid down over the verse with a slow, brooding drum and bass hammering along with only slight guitars in he distance, before everything thunders together for a restrained chorus.

The whole thing breaks down towards the end culminating in a funky, dance styled closure that never really explodes but, that would have been the obvious ending.

All in all, a tasty little number as usual from the Down boys. Head on over to Ash-Official to hear the track for yourself. Hurry up, only two weeks till Single T is out.

Ash – Physical World (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , , , , , , , on June 8, 2010 by Tickets There

Little later than we’ve liked. If Ash have the decency to be on time, you think we’d manage it. Fortunately it’s given us a few extra days to absorb the latest release in the A-Z series and this is always a good think when your love for the music increases.

Physical World is a real easy going, poppy punkish kind of track, like Ash’s earlier material. There’s the obligatory catchy chorus, the heavy guitar driven killer riff / solo and less lyrics than Baldrick’s Magnum octopus’. In short, the track sends a message about returning to basics of society rather than living in the on-line world (say, spending your spare time blogging rather than living – Ed). It’s got everything you need, it’s full of beams and it’s damn right tasty. Definitely a high point of A-Z Part II.

Well worth a visit to Ash-Official.com for a listen. Enjoy!

Ash – Binary (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , , , , , on May 23, 2010 by Tickets There

Getting closer to the end of the series and the success machine that is Ash’s A-Z rolls on. Their latest track, Binary is a little slice of dance/pop heaven. Lighter than TT’s preferred Ash sound, the song still retains the perfect pop sensibilities, catchy changes and flat our perfectionism we love about the group.

Any fans of Return of White Rabbit and Space Shot are sure to love this wee one. We miss the guitars but change is always good and let’s face it, Ash always handle change well.

Check out the track @ Ash-Official.com. See ye all in two weeks!

Ash – Insects (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , , on May 19, 2010 by Tickets There

Wow, we’re very, very behind with the Ash reviews. KISS really messed things up for a few weeks and the very sad passing of Ronnie James Dio didn’t exactly help motivate the Tickets There minds. Now we’re determined to get back in full swing and what better way to make our return, but by writing our 42,000 Ash review.

Rather than going the complex or over the top route, Ash have settled on the fairly straight forward pop approach. Insects flows well, the chorus is catchy and the word Insects constantly being repeated will conjure up some images.

Not a song you could write a million words about and not the best thing the band’s ever come out with but a decent effort all the same. Towards the end things really drive home and the guitars are stand out. Some serious finger tabbing or something going on there.

Not bad lads, keep it up.

Check out Ash-Official.com to hear it. Hurry, new track coming on the 24th

Ash – Mind Control (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , , , , , , , on April 25, 2010 by Tickets There

God, as soon as one Ash review goes up there’s another to be done. We were 100% sure single O wasn’t coming till next week but here we are, another two weeks over and another fecking single review to do. Thank god the song in question is damn right savage.

While Single N, Dare To Dream was lacking in the ass kicking department, Mind Control has gone and given the second half of Ash’s incredible A-Z Singles the kick off it needed. It’s got guitars, it’s got solo’s, it’s catchy and there’s swear words, one of Rock’s most beloved and mourned siblings. What the Fuck is going on? Ash are kicking ass left, right and centre, that’s what.

Excellent addition to the series and one that’s gotten Tickets There excited all over again. Thanks to Mind Control, we won’t forget single P’s release date. See ye in two weeks.

Ash – A-Z Vol.1 (Album Review)

Posted in Album Review, IRISH NOISE!, Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 25, 2010 by Tickets There

The last couple of months have been anything but quiet in the Ash camp. After the mega selling Free All Angles, the well received and much heavier Meltdown and the slightly underwhelming Twilight of the Innocents (Lads, you never gave that album any proper attention so shut the f**k up – Ed.) and the loss of guitarist Charlotte Hatherley, it seemed Ash were on the decline. Like, how long can three guys all in their thirty’s write songs about summer romances and Star Wars?? When the band reappeared in 2009 and announced plans to release 26 singles over the course of a year, Tickets There didn’t exactly hold the highest of hopes. Goes to show critics, even under-experience, untrained ones like us can get it wrong.

Ash do everything on this record. If it’s hard dance basted floor fillers, gritty guitar grundge classics, catchy pop rock highlights, heavy guitar driven bruisers or stripped back, piano and acoustic ballads you’re after, you’re guaranteed to find it here. Tracks like Arcadia, Space Shot, Dionysian Urge, War With Me, Return of White Rabbit, Ichiban, Neon, The Dead Disciples and Command really drive this album home and prove Ash can write and release singles as easily as the rest of us breath. Bigger ballad numbers like Joy Kicks Darkness, Pripyat, Song of Your Desire and Tracers give the individual singles a connecting quality that brings them together enough to work surprisingly well as an album.

On top of the first 13 singles and Return of White Rabbit, the band have lashed on four extra bonus tracks and aside from the stench of cheese coming from Coming Around Again, they prove to work quite well. The Creeps is easily something the band could have written in their early Jack Names the Planets days which CTRL-ALT-DEL comes from the same family of A Life Less Ordinary.

We’re stumped for words. We have given Ash an excessive amount of space on Tickets There since last year and there’s a lot left to go. In short, these first 13 singles are the finest musical outputs Ash have released in almost a decade and with another 13 to go, we’re sure we won’t be stuck for words for long.

Ash – Dare To Dream (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, News, Single Review with tags , , , , , on April 11, 2010 by Tickets There

Two weeks have passed and as promised, Ash have returned with the second half of their A – Z release. With the Volume 1 singles coming out on two CD’s on the 19th, it’s time for fans to re-focus on the second batch and first single, Dare To Dream seems to be taking things in the right direction.

The song itself is a little drawn out. It’s doesn’t deliver the energetic, rockier side of the groups sound but does stick to the A – Z trademark grandness. It’s constantly develops as you listen but never uncovers any real surprises. Saying that, we prefer it to True Love 1980 (Single A of the series) – so as openers go, this ones ahead.

This series has already given fans more worthwhile material than we could have hoped and with another twelve singles to go, we know they have just as many more quality singles to go. This won’t be a stand out in the long run, but it’s a good sign of things to come.

Ash – War With Me (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , , on March 28, 2010 by Tickets There

Single M, War With Me marks the half way point in Ash’s colossal A – Z Single series and what an achievements it’s become. The songs so far have displayed some of Ash’s most lovable traits, some of their finest pop / rock moments and a grandness rarely seen in their previous material. We’re once again delighted to report that today’s release continues this fine line of quality, enjoyment and few frills pop rock.

War With Me is a simple slice of the bands irresistibly catchy gift for pop. Built predominantly around a heavy Piano, the song is a laid back, lighter than most little number. Short, sweet and loveable. Since we’re half way there, why don’t you just check the video below and hear it for yourself, you won’t be disappointed.

Review: Ash – Live @ Andrews Lane Theatre, Dublin (March 20th, 2010)

Posted in Gig Review, IRISH NOISE!, Music with tags , , , , , , , on March 22, 2010 by Tickets There

Always a dodgy things these free, invite only promo gigs. It’s either going to be a small room, located in a budding, hip – fashion friendly district of town with The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin jamming in the corner while people look elsewhere, laughing prolifically and sipping champagne. Or, they can be like tonight’s RU7up4It home coming for the winners of the Bring Them Back For The Craic campaign, with Downpatrick legends Ash and local Dublin soul, funk, pop consortium, Republic of Loose, leading festivities. A good night had by all.. to say the least!

Andres Lane Theatre isn’t a venue we have a whole pile of experience with but, being greeted by tall young models tonight is surely going to remain one of our fondest memories. Unfortunately the experience was memorizing enough to completely distract us from Republic of Looses’ efforts on stage, but from what we gathered, they did a pretty good job. They certainly had everyone else in top form anyways. (not very professional to write things like that lads, at least lie – Ed)

Tickets There has dedicated a lot of space to pop / rock legends Ash recently and tonight’s gig proves this hasn’t been in vain. The trio burst straight into Lose Control with the same adrenaline and youthful exuberance that made them so fun in the first place. They follow up with a cover of The Undertones, Teenage Kicks before kicking into a blistering version of TT’s personal favorite, A Life Less Ordinary. Not running out of steam early, the band deliver a hard hitting greatest hits set that see’s them visit almost every album in their catalogue (Nu-Clear Sounds being the exception).

Not to be upstaged by their past, the band play several tracks from their current A-Z singles which fit perfectly amongst the new material, so much so that the classic Girl From Mars falls pale in the face of the techno stomping Return of White Rabbit, which closes the show.

Amidst the chants for ‘One More Tune’, Tim returns to the stage, cheekily apologizing that unfortunately the band are prepared to play three more tracks and hopes we’ll be appeased. Single C of the A-Z series, Arcadia explodes through the PA, rejuvenating the now tired crowd before a cover of Thin Lizzy’s Whiskey In The Jar, with ROL’s Mick Pyro on vocals, brings the house down. Tim, grinning as always, announces how wonderful it is to “visit Dublin to cover a Metallica song”, before the band launch into a set closing, Burn Baby Burn and leave the stage as conquering heroes.

Ash – Dionysian Urge (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , , , , on March 18, 2010 by Tickets There

Tickets There is very sorry for the delay getting this review up. We started listening on Sunday but became more fixated on the fact that the previous release, Song of Your Desire is actually way better than we originally thought. Ah well, time to move on.

Ash’s latest release, Dionysian Urge is a hark back to their basics sound. The kind of feel good pop rock that made us fall in love with them in the first place. There’s none of the A – Z trademark piano’s and grandness. Just good old fashioned riffs, beats, heavy guitars and a rattling bass.

Honestly, we’re struggling to write this week so we’ll just say it, we couldn’t love this song anymore. It’s just so hassle free, upbeat and has such lovely changes. The whole thing just works so well it’s not even funny.

Incredible effort from the lads and one that’s truly going to be a treat for all Ash fans, old and new. Head over to Ash-Official to hear it for yourself.

Ash – Song of Your Desire (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , , , , , on February 28, 2010 by Tickets There

It’s kind of sad to know we’re almost half way through this release. With the release of single K, there’s only two more singles left (out of respect for the privacy the band have shrouded around future releases, we won’t tell you which letters are next. Good luck figuring that out!) before we reach the official half way point. You know what that means? It means we have fifteen more singles to go before we start getting all sentimental.

Today’s single, Song of Your Desire, sees the band return to a much softer, more A-Z style of grand harmonies, slow melodies and the occasional input from the guitars. As songs go it’s nice but as the series goes, it wouldn’t be top of my list. Ash do melodic well when you think of songs like Walking Barefoot, Shinning Light and Sometimes but TT ain’t liking this particular drawn out style as much. If you liked Candy, you should check it out.

Out of eleven singles, this and The Dead Disciples would be our least favorites. Not bad when you consider the other 9 are all pretty savage. If you want to be in with a chance of seeing some of this material Live in Dublin on March 20th, hop over to our Competition Post and answer an unbelievably, unfairly difficult question.

Or, if you want to write back and tell us we suck and ASH rule, then by all means check out the track at Ash-Official.com, come back and slate us. In the mean time, we’re listening to Command!

Ash – Command (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , , , on February 14, 2010 by Tickets There

Happy Valentines all. Tickets There was passing no heed of the day until Ash made it extra special by generously releasing single J from the A – Z Series a day Early.

After the highs of Space Shot, Ichiban, Pripyat and Neon, we were half thinking single J would be a disappointment. I mean seriously, how long can any band keep releasing one brilliant single after another for? Well, we can’t answer the last question but fortunately for Ash fans, it still doesn’t look like there’s any stopping them.

Command, the eleventh release of the series, is awesome. No dance beats, no grand piano melodies and no holding back. This is possibly the closest thing to their old sound they’ve released in years. The guitars are loud, heavy and unstoppable. The bass thunders through the track with an incredible crunchiness and Tim’s voice is back to its hard edged style. The chorus, as always, is as catchy as they come and the boys just cut loose on some good old fashioned alt/pop rock.

It may not have the mass appeal of Space Shot but fans will love this one. It’s heavy, fast and hard as nails. It’s very different from any of the other songs in the series and goes back to basics and the lads certainly haven’t lost their talent for writing a rockin’ number when they choose. Tickets There loves this band and every two weeks they’re reminding everyone why we love them so much.

Last week, the band announced they were in the studio recording the second half of the singles for release and the first set (A – M) will be released on CD this April.

See Ash-Official.com for more news and to hear Command (plus all the other tracks released so far)

Ash – Neon (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , , , on February 1, 2010 by Tickets There

Sorry for the lack of updates recently folks. Our editor had a nasty fall last Friday but we’re back on track now and just in time for Ash’s latest release, Neon.

We’re up to the latter I now (single 10 in the A – Z Series inc. Return of White Rabbit). So far the series has been pretty terrific. Tracks such as Space Shot, Arcadia, Ichiban, Tracers, Joy Kicks Darkness and ROWR are  already classics as far as the fans are concerned and they’ve gone a long way in proving that Ash are a band deserving of any and all attention and praise we the people can pile on them. With another seventeen singles to go over the next year, one has to wonder if there’s any stopping the lads in their quest to prove that bands can – work perfectly well outside the classic album format. Judging by Neon, it’s going to be very hard stopping them for making it work.

Neon is a slightly off beat kind of mesh of sounds heard on the other tracks. Despite the album format disappearing, it’s very obvious that these songs all share a very common tone and structure. I’ve been listening to it since around ten this morning and originally I thought it was one of the weaker tracks like Dead Disciples but nope, proven wrong again. It’s a brilliant track with an oddly catchy chorus. The dark overtones in the verse work so well against the more upbeat direction the chorus takes.

Another winner and it just gets stronger every time you listen to it. Tickets There is back, Ash are back, Ireland get ready…..actually, Ireland, please just don’t slap us for saying something as corny as that.
