Brains – Strange Meat (EP Review)

Posted in EP Review, IRISH NOISE!, Music with tags , , , , , , , , on July 12, 2010 by Tickets There

Recession or no recession, this country never stops producing good music and Cork band, Brains are the latest example of that. Formed in 2009, the band play what they describe as ‘blackened rock n roll’ which loosely translated means ‘American styled stoner rock / metal. Not that this comment really does the band justice because their debut EP, Strange Meat is packed with little gems and the odd one we’re still getting our heads around.

Wolfbeast opens things up and we still haven’t decided if we like it or not. It’s a strange one that slips between comical and pretty savage. The chunky bass, the Hammond organ and explosive guitars are excellent and the singer’s voice is powerful during the verses but something happens in the bridge and things go off course a little.  Maybe it’s just because the song is called Wolfbeast and we don’t know the band well enough to let them away it.

Second song 3ft Wide 7ft Tall was the other one we weren’t full sure about at first. Given a few spins though it quickly convinced us to keep going with this band. Opening with a doom, piano / guitar – slowed down black metal styled intro, the song quickly changes into a lighter pop rock styled verse before the booming guitars return for the chorus. Pretty funny in places but works well as a serious number because the music’s there to back it up.

Things really kick off with the guitar driven That Awful Witch which is chuck-full of dueling guitar leads, a funky chunky bass line and some very catchy hooks. An excellent number and a welcome sign that this band are not just here to sing about Wolfbeast and massive women (3ft Wide 7ft Tall isn’t about women TT, listen properly next time – Ed)….then again, AC/DC made a career out of doing that.

Black on Black really gets the full on, hard rock buzz going. Opening with another simple yet atmospheric bass intro, the song is once again filled with hooky guitars, riffs, a belting chorus and some dark fantasy lyrics. The guitar explosion at the end is reminiscent of the Thin Lizzy and sits perfectly well with the slowed down, seventies tone on the song.

Muddy Water opens with a riff that’s become synonymous with the band’s sound after just five songs. It gets a little repetitive but the song itself is great, broken down blues rock with some iconic dark metal sounds thrown in. Lovely guitar work and another credible song to make this a damn fine EP.

Things ain’t over yet however as the fine bumpkin (love that word) guitar intro to the EP’s title track kicks in. Strange Meat breaks the trend of the a crunchy bass intro and dives head first into a chaotic, raw guitar driven track. Tender moments, noisy moments – another winner.

Excellent EP, full of very enjoyable moments and definitely a band to watch if you’re a fan of seventies heavy metal or heavy rock. Like we said there’s a few moments in there where you’re trying to figure out which side you’re on but when Tickets There sees these guys live, we’ll be there singing along to Wolfbeast as loud as we can. Oh, and did we mention you can download it for free from This Location?

MySpace Review – The Hot Sprokets

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, MySpace Review with tags , , , , , on July 12, 2010 by Tickets There

Ya know, we’re getting close to the 100 reviews mark for this series and the good bands just keep on coming. Technically, that’s like 70 good/great/amazing bands from Ireland that we’ve found in the last two years and still doesn’t include some of the best in the country. Considering how half-arsed we run this blog, we’re willing to bet there’s at least double that number still waiting to be discovered. MySpace Reviews forever and long may everything come up Millhouse.

Today’s band came to our attention when we noticed they were playing our least favorite Dublin venue, The Odessa Club this week. Fortunately, the Live @ The Odessa night attracts some really great names so you ignore the thoughts of men in pink polo shirts sipping white wine and comparing their Beemer interiors and focus on the bands at hand. The Hot Sprockets play retro revival sixties rock with several helpings of bluegrass, KOL style licks and hooky guitars. We here at TT don’t like KOL but we’ll happily take the rest.

As usual, we’ve never seen the band live or heard their album.

Opening with the busy bodied Honey Skippin’, things get off to a great start. It’s robust, rocking and instantly friendly. Excellent number, our favorite of the lot and a great sign of things to come from the band. Sleep Shake’s next (skipping the live number) and it’s a much more relaxed affair. There are some bumpkin melody guitars, some croaky vocals, a real catchy, acoustic White Stripes chorus and everything else sounds good too….nice!

Solid Gold intros with a good chunky bass, some harmonica licks and a good old fashioned guitars playing some not too pushed blues rock. Similar in structure to Sleep Shake but with more of an edge, definitely another one worth listening to.

The final two songs seem to be much earlier work by the band. On Your Own is alright, wouldn’t be mental about it. It’s not awful or anything but it’s just lacking in character when compared to the previous three tracks. Creepin is more upbeat but the vocals seem intent on replicating the KOL style just too much for our liking. The songs could be great and we’d like to hear it re-recorded with the singer’s newer style and then we’ll give it another go.

All in all, one to watch. The newer material sounds fantastic and boasts great potential. The Hot Sprokets are a  band Tickets There wants to hear more from. Visit their MySpace now by Clicking Here, then come back and bitch about how great the KOL are or how the singer sounds nothing at all like them in the earlier material and this site is run by dickheads for douche bags.

ACTION | PAUSE | REACTION – REWIND (EP Review)

Posted in EP Review, IRISH NOISE!, Music with tags , , , , on July 10, 2010 by Tickets There

Review: Stephen Byrne (Originally posted @ Alternative Irish Music Review)

Action Pause Reaction display much potential on their debut EP Rewind. The title tack starts of with a drum beat reminiscent of Everlong before Ronan O’Leary churns out a riff that Josh Homme would be proud of.

See the Light of Day is a slightly more passive outing akin to Pavement or Jay Mascis and the Fog while Breaking Under the Strain is highly influenced by Northern Ireland’s finest punk rock band Therapy? it contains more high tempo chainsaw guitar riffs.

Unfortunately all these fine riffs are lost in muddy mixing and production. The drums especially suffer from a very thin sound. There is no kick to them and the cymbals wash over everything. Studio inexperience and financial restraints have probably stopped this from being a much better end product.

However, a trip to a proper studio with a proper engineer could make them one of the best the rock trios in the land. Until then, go and see them live.

Review: The Walls – Live @ The Odessa, Dublin (July 8th, 2010)

Posted in Gig Review, IRISH NOISE!, Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 9, 2010 by Tickets There

Recession or no recession, the Odessa hasn’t changed a bit. Tickets There’s willing to bet that every man who gets their hair styled in Dublin is in tonight to sample the fine food, drink finest bottles of wine from the bar and soak up the pompous, ego pumped atmosphere. Why do we do bother? Because Live At The Odessa just won’t stop bringing good bands into the fecking place.

As usual, Tickets There (purposely) manages to miss tonight’s support. Last thing we need is a singer songwriter to get us in the mood for the legendary Wall brothers. Instead, trips to local McKenna’s in Dun Laoghaire and O’Reilly’s under Tara are all the support we need. With Murphy’s in hand (of course they don’t have Guinness, that would be too common), it’s time to stand back and soak up some relaxing new material from The Walls.

Opening with their newest single, Carrying The Fire, Steve and Joe begin the show solo with some added beats courtesy of the musical prodigy that is Joe Wall. Swapping vocals, multiple instruments and harmonies mark the early set with their experimental new live style adding a nice vibe to the show. Rather than bringing a full band on tour, The Walls are testing out a new audio-visual show which allows the rest of the band to appear on a screen behind the brothers, letting them play and interact with each other. Surprisingly enough, this new style of performing loses little of the vibe you get from a full band show with everything rehearsed and timed to a T.

Treating fans to a nice selection of material from their up and coming third album, Stop The Lights, the band are keeping their stripped back, cooler than Alaska sound going with atmospheric, ear pleasing tunes. Phantom Power sees Joe take over vocal duties with Steve mostly adding background harmonies. Having never gotten a chance to see The Walls live before tonight, Tickets There’s pleasantly surprised to see Joe knows his way around a lead guitar just as well as a bass.

Not to shy away from their older material, the band manage to knock out classics such as Passing Through, To The Bright and Shinning Sun and a thunderous performance of Drowning Pool before closing the main set and retuning for an encore comprised of Rusty Old River, a song they originally recorded as The Stunning and the Walls very own, Bone Deep.

With the gig over, it’s time to scraper and seek refuge in the cozy confines of The Stags Head with a good, Dublin born pint of the black stuff. Great night from a great band, Tickets There have our eyes focused on the next albums release. More Walls in 2010 will be a lovely thing.

IRISH NOISE! – The Urges (MySpace Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, MySpace Review with tags , , , , , on July 4, 2010 by Tickets There

Though The Urges may be more suited for a MySpace Review, we thought it was about time we did another Irish Noise feature instead because honestly, we prefer the art work and the Urges have been around for about seven years now so it’s our fault for not discovering them before today, not theirs.

Like many bands we’ve reviewed recently, The Urges play sixties psychedelic styled rock and again like many Irish bands, they play it well. The MS player starts on I Gotta Wait which has a nice alt/country opening before falling into a Rolling Stones styled swaggering rock number. Lotta crashing drums, lotta guitar work and good strong vocals. On top of the solid structure, they’ve got a pretty savage tune in I Gotta Wait.

It Ain’t Right comes on next and this one falls more into the psychedelic styled song with the standard Hammond organ joining proceedings. The vocals are a little more nasally than before but the backing chants from the band help beef things up a little. Musically it’s strong again and gets better and better as it goes on. Nothing too stand outish but very enjoyable all the same.

13th Floor (Live at the BBC) comes in third and again the psych sound returns with some Door’s-esque / garage rock fusion. Very similar in composition to many sixties greats and all the better for it. Song becomes even more enjoyable in the final minutes as the band branch out from the simple verse, chorus end structure of the other too and indulge in some badly needed trippy jamming.

Final (first) tune, The Urges Theme is another slice of catchy gritty rock. Good verse, good chorus, not. Not a song you’d write a hundred words about but worth several listens. Think we’re running out of steam today so why not check out their MySpace page and give them a go for yourself, you won’t be disappointed.

Ash – Instinct (Single Review)

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, Single Review with tags , , , , , , on July 4, 2010 by Tickets There

Another fantastically sunny Sunday here in Dublin and what better way to celebrate than by closing the curtains, straining the tired eyes and listening to the latest single from Ash. Tickets There only managed to reach bed around eight am this morning so we’re relying on the Co. Down boys to wake us up more than coffee ever could with a happy, jumpy, summery feel good hit. It may take longer than we’d like, but they get us there.

Instinct is the latest single in the A-Z series and it’s worthy of the title. Took a wee while to get into this one as it’s not as engrossing as quality Ash material and not a massive departure in styles from many previous A-Z tracks. It does manage to grow quickly though but will doubtfully ever become one of the more memorable numbers from the bands career.

Saying that, the song boasts some great dance pop beats, a brilliant beefy bass and a savage guitar solo so there’s plenty to make it worth your while giving this one a few spins. Tim’s voice also has some sternness to the tone which gives the track a backbone and stops it from becoming one of their few ‘avoid’ numbers.

See ya’ll in two weeks for Single U, one of the last releases in the series (sob, what’ll we do without our regular Ash reviews?? You TELL ME????)

Hop over to Ash-Official.com now, to hear Instinct for yourself.

Review: Megadeth – Live @ The Marquee, Cork (June 14th, 2010)

Posted in Gig Review, Music with tags , , , , , , , , , on July 4, 2010 by Tickets There

Just one year after their incredible performance with Judas Priest in Dublin, the Deth are back and this time, founding member Dave ‘Junior’ Ellefson is with them. Megadeth may not be the most popular of the early eighties thrash metallers but they’re by far Tickets There’s favorites. Dave Mustaine and co’s rapid fire riffs, snarling vocals and mind devouring metal colossus are bench marks few in the metal industry can equal, let along top. Even now, nearly thirty years after they formed, Megadeth can write and perform aggressive, angry metal like no-one else. Their latest album Endgame is a record that’s power is sure to grow with time but tonight, Megadeth are willing to forgo promotion in favor of treating their Irish fans to an overwhelmingly impressive array of their classics.

Opening act Sirocco are onstage by the time Tickets There reaches the venue. After coming across them before during the MySpace Review series, we actually made an effort to catch their show and we’re glad we did. Not only have they got the songs to justify supporting the mighty Megadeth, they also have the performance ability to pull it off. Unfortunately the crowd tonight aren’t exactly swarming but Sirocco manage to entice those present to wedge around the front of the stage for a great set of Irish brand metal. Memorable and a perfect opener for the American metal heavyweights.

The lights go dim, air-raid sirens rev up and Megadeth arrive on stage one by one with Mustaine the last to appear. The show explodes open with a blistering version of Dialectic Chaos from Endgame and the sher force, might and power of their newer material is instantly conveyed to the crowd before the band lead into Wake Up Dead from their classic Peace Sells Album. Dave Mustaine’s vocals come out a little muffled during Wake Up Dead but seconds into the bands new single, Headcrusher, he comes to life, giving the song a power no producer can capture.

Rather than going the Iron Maiden route of forcing fans to sit through an hour of new material, Megadeth dip into their back catalogue and show the brutal force of In My Darkest Hour before delighting the crowd with a full performance of 1990’s Rust In Peace album to celebrate the records 20th anniversary.

Holy Wars starts with a beefed up sound that sees band and fans alike put heads down and prepare for the war to come. The force of the performance is memorizing and grows stronger with each song. Hanger 18 enhances the feeling as Mustaine and Chris Broderick plough through the song’s four hundred and eighty six solos. Take No Prisoners and Five Magics are a thrill to finally hear live together before the face belting (not melting) Lucretia unveils its many layers of destructive powers. Tornado of Souls quickly becomes one of the nights highlights with the band’s unrelenting power showing no sings of surrendering.

The opening notes of Trust signal the end of an amazing performance of RIP that many fans would have been happy enough to pay for on it’s own before the realization that The Deth ain’t finished yet. A Tout Le Monde brings the band to a higher level before an invasive performance of Sweating Bullets delivers some of the finest riffs n lyrics metal has to offer. The band closes the main set with a full on, no holes barred, grander the grand onslaught of Symphony of Destruction before returning to the stage for an extended performance of Peace Sells that annihilates all those left standing and trumpets the bands ascent to the thrones they so truly deserve.

Mustaine might be generally thought off as the metal world’s trouble maker, but there’s no denying that his ability as a song writer, singer and performer makes him one of metal’s top caliber elites. After three decades his snarling mannerisms haven’t changed much but, neither has his power to deliver one of the finest metal shows you’re ever likely to see and tonight, the good people of Cork can attest to this. Hopefully it won’t be long before Megadeth return and do it all again.

MySpace Review – The Revellions

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, MySpace Review with tags , , , , , , on July 3, 2010 by Tickets There

Not sure if this is our third or fourth attempt to get this bands review finished but no matter what computer we try, their MySpace page brings IE and Firefox to a near freeze. Very frustrating when you only have 30 minutes to do a review! There’s one saving grace though, the band sound wicked cool.

As usual we’ve never seen them live or heard their album.

Ain’t No Love kicks things off and its psychedelic sixties organ driven rock delivered with punk brutality. It’s busy, forceful and changes constantly leaving no spare room, no let up and nothing to flaw. Really good and well worth the 10 minutes it takes to get the f**ker loaded up.

Have It All comes on next and it’s more of a desperado styled sixties piece. The vocals are just as dirty as before, the music’s just as interactive despite a far more sublimed style. Tickets There is quite happy to be sold on the believability of the tracks alone. It’s not an Irish style and not something we’re massively good at it but The Revellions seems to have nailed it.

All The Lights (From the BBC Sessions) sounds like something straight from a Tarantino soundtrack. It’s got attitude, swagger and once again it’s delivered in that crisp cool desperado sound we all love. Well, we love it, that’s why Guns N’ Roses are so high on our list?

Second on the player, fourth in line – the irresistibly catchy Down On Your Luck comes along to blow the quiet desperado style out the window with some forceful, excellently delivered rock n roll. Some fantastic guitar and bass interaction, particularly towards the end when they spiral off together. Great number, top of the list so far.

Not The Attraction sees the band finally getting close to the ‘Garage Band’ tag they’ve labeled themselves with. Possibly one of the scariest, strangest songs we’ve heard while doing these reviews. Clusters of intense, over volumed noise compiled of pounding drums, looped and layered screaming vocals and dirtiness not seen since eighties LA. Completely chaotic, totally nonsensical yet strangely appealing.

Not totally sure if Walking Away is the final track due to the half frozen screen. Can barley move the damn thing but we’re gonna call it quits, too much messing around. Thankfully the guys don’t let us leave on a low note as Walking Away turns out to be a thumping little punky rock number. Not a massive leap in styles from the other tunes but instead, a perfect delivery of a sound these guys are brilliant and writing.

Yet another album Tickets There will be purchasing in the near future. Well worth heading over to their MySpace and sticking out the loading issues for a few spins.

MySpace Review – Admiral Black

Posted in IRISH NOISE!, Music, MySpace Review with tags , , , , , , on July 1, 2010 by Tickets There

Anyone else been wondering what happened to Humanzi? Me too and thanks to up and coming Irish act, The Murder Clues, a piece of the puzzle has been presented to us. The manzi’s leading vox man, Shaun Mulrooney has been working on a solo project entitled Admiral Black and it appears the time has come for its launching.

The cheek you say, how dare someone in this country attempt to launch a career without informing Irelands sexiest music blog!! Not to worry folks, Tickets There’s as forgiving as a corrupt priest and we’ve taken the high road and decided to bless this inception with a complimentary review (going rate is €5,000 for other bands).

As usual, we’ve never heard the album or seen them live.

Opening song NiceMan (3 Legged Mule) retains many of the traits from the Admirals former band but manages to edge things in a different direction. Rather than the punky sound we’re used to from Shaun, there’s more of a swaggering rock front backed by an eighties upbeatness. The song’s catchy, well constructed and full of little extras to make it a tasty opening number. The cowboy styled acoustic and, what we’re presuming are maracas in the background also appeal to the ears.

Got Love If You Want It follows a similar style with a stronger riff and slightly more hard-line feel to the delivery. Not as dancy but just as appealing. Shaun’s talent is unveiling its-self more and more and the sound, while similar in places to his former group, still manages to differentiate enough to stand on its own.

The true grandness of these songs comes to a peak on third track, Closure. A daunting, haunting number lamenting love, like all great song writers are. The style and tone are a big leap away from any sound Humanzi used on their albums showing Shaun is no one trick pony and has a lot more to offer the world.

Final song, The Worm of the Third Sting represents another change, this time more in the sixties pop rock direction. There’s a psychedelic vibe mixed with a subdued poppish themes. Again, another outright winner.

Overall, a great effort so far and Tickets There’s banking there’s many more where they came from. We’re delighted to report tat’s it’s not a loyalty to Humanzi that we’re lavishing the praise, if anything we feared the worst but Shaun’s pulled it off and we’re quite happy to refer to him as Admiral Black going forward.

The Admiral Black return to Irish shores this month to play The Garage on July 29th and Twisted Pepper on July 31st. Tickets There (leg feeling up to it) will be there with the usual bells in place.

Def Leppard Friday – Gods of War

Posted in Music, Music Video with tags , , on June 25, 2010 by Tickets There

Classic of the highest order! Just listen to that riff 😀
